MICHIGAN

Paul Bunyan
Oscoda, MI
The Oscoda Bunyan stands in front of Furtaw Field (also known as Paul Bunyan Park). Oscoda claims to be the birthplace of Paul Bunyan and also hosts Paul Bunyan Days (a festival with a lumberjack show, chainsaw carving competition, and other events). There was once another Bunyan statue in town. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Paul Bunyan and Babe
Ossineke, MI
The Ossineke Bunyan is about 25' tall and was created in 1938 by Paul Domke (who also created Dinosaur Gardens). He has a loudspeaker where the right hand shirt pocket would be. I don't if or for what purpose it was used. The Ossineke Babe was created in 1953 by Walter Hayden. She is about 10' tall. Both figures could really used some TLC. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Paul Bunyan
Manistique, MI
The Manistique Bunyan is about 15' tall and stands in front of the Chamber of Commerce. He was constructed to look like a Muffler Man and has been in town (originally at a different location) since at least the early 1970s. Manistique claims to be the home of Paul Bunyan. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Paul Bunyan and Babe
St. Ignace, MI
The St. Ignace Bunyan and Babe are behind chain link fencing at the Castle Rock lookout tourist attraction. I don't know how long they have been here but they appear to be very old (1950s?). For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Giant Lumberjack
West Branch, MI
The Giant Lumberjack sits in front of the Lumberjack Restaurant. I don't know if he's supposed to represent a generic lumberjack or Paul Bunyan.

Paul Bunyan
Alpena, MI
The Alpena Bunyan sculpture is 28' tall and made of Kaiser auto parts. He was built for the Paul Bunyan Gas Station in Grayling, MI. The gas station closed and he was moved here to the Alpena Community College in 1998. For more, see this website.
