The Union Passenger Terminal was built in 1954 and was the last major terminal rail station built in the U.S. The "UPT" was built of steel and concrete and features fresco murals (four panels) by Conrad Albrizio depicting the history of Louisiana. The marble ticket counter, clock, and other features are original.
In the 1970s, Greyhound Lines began sharing the building with Amtrak, creating what is known as an intermodal facility. I believe this is when the lettering Transportation Center (now missing) was added to the roof. The building was temporarily used as a city jail ("Camp Amtrak") during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4. |
