Studio Depot
Hollywood, CA
The Studio Depot building is from 1927. Studio Depot is a lighting equipment company and a division of Mole-Richardson. I believe the "M/R" logo over the entrance indicates that they are the original tenants. For more, see this website. [left photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Moxley Veterinary
Hollywood, CA
The Moxley Veterinary building was built in 1930. The Greyhound sign on the tower remains although the building now houses offices.

former May Co. Department Store
Los Angeles, CA
Hollywood Palladium
Los Angeles, CA
Frolic Room
Los Angeles, CA
The former May Co. Department Store was built in 1940 and was the company's first store outside of downtown. The corner design incorporates black granite and gold tile, while the rest of the building is concrete. In the early 1990s, the building was nearly demolished. In 1998, it became home to LACMA West (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art). For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

The Hollywood Palladium opened in 1940 as a dance hall. Over the years, the facility has hosted big band concerts, the Lawrence Welk show, and rock concerts. The building was undergoing renovation in 2008 when this photo was taken. For more, see this website.

The Frolic Room was built in 1934 and was originally a private VIP lounge attached directly to the Pantages Theatre. It is now considered a drive bar. The colorful neon sign is still lit at night. For more, see this website.

Loman Foods Mart
Los Angeles, CA
Loman Foods Mart, another source identifies it as "Roman's Food Mart", was built around 1935. It now houses this Staples store.

Security First National Bank
Los Angeles, CA
Film Exchange Building
Los Angeles, CA
Schwab's Drug Store
Los Angeles, CA
The Security First National Bank was built in 1929. It was designed by Morgan, Walls and Clements who also did the Wiltern Theatre, the El Capitan Theatre, and other noteworthy L.A. buildings. The old vault still remains. The building features black and gold terra-cotta, as well as aluminum grillwork. Although the former bank was restored in 2004, as of 2008, it looks overdue for more attention. The building has housed City Beat since 2006. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Film Exchange Building was built around 1928 (another source says 1937).

Schwab's Drug Store had five locations in the Los Angeles area. The most well-known of them was the one was Sunset & Vine which opened in 1932 and closed in the 1980s. That building was demolished in 1987. In 2004, a "Schwab's Restaurant" (shown above) opened in memory of the famous pharmacy's lunch counter. However, that venture only lasted a couple years. The sign shown here is a recreation of the original. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Dominguez-Wilshire Building
Los Angeles, CA
Wilshire Center Building
Los Angeles, CA
Sontag Drug Store
Los Angeles, CA
The Dominguez-Wilshire Building was designed by Morgan, Walls & Clements and built in 1930. This was the flagship store for Myer Siegel Department Stores. For more, see this website.

The Wilshire Center Building was built in 1928.

Sontag Drug Store was built in 1935 and contained a soda fountain and coffee shop. Another source refers to this building as Chandler's Shoe Store so that might have been another tenant. The building is now occupied by Wilshire Beauty.

Mauretania Apartments
Los Angeles, CA
The Mauretania Apartments were designed by Milton Black and built in 1934. The name is a reference to the ocean liner. Many Streamline Moderne buildings incorporated nautical elements such as railings and porthole windows. These apartments were built for actor Jack Haley, best known for his role as the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz". For more, see this website.

Doheny Courtyard
West Hollywood, CA
Sunset Tower Apartments
Los Angeles, CA
The Dohney Courtyard was built in the late 1930s. I don't know if this was the apartment complex's original name. For more, see their website.

The Sunset Tower Apartments were designed by Leland A. Bryant and built in 1929. The building later became the Argyle Hotel. Today, it is known as the Sunset Tower Hotel. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Milk
Los Angeles, CA
Milk, an ice cream parlor and restaurant, is housed in this building from 1931. The building was once occupied by the Richard Tyler fashion boutique. For more, see their website.
