TEXAS

Fair Park
Dallas, TX
Fair Park includes the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the U.S. They were built for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition and unlike most expositions, these buildings were designed to be permanent. There are also numerous Art Deco statues and murals. The Hall of State, upper left photo, now houses the Dallas Historical Society.

The Park was established in 1880 and also contains the Dallas Zoo and the Music Hall. The Park still hosts the annual State Fair and the New Year's Cotton Bowl football game. The Cotton Bowl building was constructed in 1930 and hosts various football, soccer, and other sporting events throughout the rest of the year. Big Tex makes his appearance during the State Fair. Sedberry Furniture
Waco, TX
former Guaranty Finance Co.
Austin, TX
The Sedberry Furniture building was originally "Hicks Rubber" which sold tires and appliances. The outline of the vertical letters for "Hicks" is just barely visible on the pylon which appears to be Streamline Moderne.

The former Guaranty Finance Co. is now occupied by Miller Blueprint's Surveying Department.

Clarke & Courts Building
Houston, TX
The Clarke & Courts Building was built in 1936 as Clarke and Courts Printing. The business closed in 1989. In 1994, the building was converted into residental space known as the TriBeca Lofts. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Washington Place
Houston, TX
A former Art Deco shopping center is being remodeled into new commercial space which will be called Washington Place. The building was constructed in 1948. It might have originally been a dance club. When these photos were taken in 2006, old signage indicated a couple of former tenants: a Hi/Lo Auto Supply and a pharmacy. I understand the building has since been restored. Does anyone know more about this building?

Foley's Department Store
Houston, TX
Foley's Department Store was founded in Houston in 1900 and developed a chain of 69 stores in TX, OK, LA, CO, and NM. This downtown store was designed by Kenneth Franzheim and built in 1947. At the time, it was one of the largest department stores in the world. Several floors were added to the building later. In 2006, Foley's closed and was rebranded as Macy's. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
