This J.J. Newberry's in Bellows Falls was designed in 1928 but not built until 1938. It was originally to have been twice as big but was scaled back with the Depression. Newberry closed in the 1980s and the space became Berry & Co. until the early 1990s. It then sat vacant for nearly a decade. It was renovated and reopened in 2004 with retail space below and condos above. The original sign was completely restored. Two upper level bowling alleys are also being saved.
This Newberry's in North Adams opened in 1926 and closed in 1993. Business suffered with the opening of a Kmart and the Berkshire Mall near Pittsfield. However, with the opening of MASS MoCA (the art museum), the downtown area has been revitalized. In 2002, Moulton's opened in the space. The sign's lettering and awning are in keeping with the style of the original occupant. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. This Newberry's in Mars Hill closed in the 1980s. In 2009, the building housed the remains of a closed video store. |
