The McCrory's department store chain was founded in 1882. At the company's peak, there were 1,300 locations nationwide. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1992. By 2002, the remaining locations closed. For more, see this website.
This Mobile McCrory's was built in 1924. It now houses a Subway restaurant. This Camden McCrory's looks like it was built in the 1920s or 1930s. Although it has long since been adapted for other businesses, these original signs remain. |

This Canonsburg McCrory's appears to be from the 1940s. It closed in 1994. It now houses Hidden Treasures, a thrift store.
This Galveston McCrory's building has been vacant for many years. These photos are from 2011. I assume this painted ghost sign indicates that this building housed the Waco McCrory's. However, the "C" details might indicate the building housed something else originally. |

The G.C. Murphy Building in Indianapolis was built in 1884. The G.C. Murphy five and dime store was a tenant from 1929 until 1998. Today, the building houses the Murphy Art Center. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
The G.C. Murphy Building in Welch has been vacant for many years. The building was constructed in 1920. I don't know when G.C. Murphy operated here. In later years, there was a Dollar General store here with a sign over the remaining "Murph" sign. |

The Ben Franklin five and dime variety store chain was established in 1927. At its peak, there were 2,500 stores nationwide. The company went bankrupt and the name was picked up by Promotions Unlimited. The corporate website lists only "kiosk" locations. It appears that all the old Ben Franklin locations are now independent operators. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
The Ben Franklin store in Independence closed around 2005. This rooftop remains. I don't know of any other locations with neon signs like this one. The Ben Franklin store in Chariton has been here since at least the 1970s and is probably much older than that. The former Ben Franklin store in Dalhart now houses a furniture store but the sign remains. |

This Wal-Mart was originally a Broadway department store, built in 1947. It was occupied by Macy's from 1996-1999 and reopened as Wal-Mart around 2001.
Harold's may have been the original occupant of this Art Deco building. There are tiles near the entrance that still spell out the name. It housed the "Harold's Army & Navy" surplus store for many years but has been vacant since the 1990s. Does anyone know more about this building? For more, see this website. |
