A&W Root Beer was founded in 1919 with the inventions of both root beer and root beer stands. A&W continued setting trends with the very first franchising in the late 1920s. By the 1960s, A&W had 2,400 outlets nationwide. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

A&W Root Beer
La Crosse, WI
The Root Beer Stand
Sharonville, OH
This A&W Root Beer sign dates from at least the early 1960s. The building was rebuilt but the sign was kept. This round logo was used before 1968 when A&W switched to an oval design. I have not seen any other signs like this. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

The Root Beer Stand opened in 1957 as an A&W. It has been called "The Root Beer Stand" since 1982. The root beer is made on-site. There are no longer carhops. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Henry's Root Beer Stand (now The Stand)
Taunton, MA
This A&W operated from the 1950s until the 1970s when the name was changed to Henry's Root Beer Stand. Henry's closed in 2007. In 2009, the drive-in reopened as The Stand. When this photo was taken, the building was being used as an off-season Christmas tree stand. For more, see this website.

The Root Beer Stand
South Westnedge Ave.
Kalamazoo, MI
The Root Beer Stand
Portage St.
Kalamazoo, MI
The Root Beer Stand on South Westnedge is another former A&W. I don't know if the location on Portage St. was an A&W. Both locations feature homemade root beer and car hops.

Eddie's Drive-in
Harrison Township, MI
Eddie's Drive-in was built in 1943 as an A&W. In the early 1980s, this drive-in was known as Sheppard's and the Dawg House. It became Eddie's Drive-in in 1987. This drive-in still features car hops on roller skates. For more, see this website.

Munchy's
Morrisville, VT
Roscoe's Barbeque
Rochester, MN
Munchy's opened as an A&W in 1955. In 1983, it was known as The Snack Bar. Munchy's has their own private-labeled bottles of root beer and "cruise-ins" with restored cars and hot-rods.

Roscoe's Barbeque occupies a former A&W Drive-in. The canopy was torn down in 1981 when Roscoe's moved in.

The Stand
Chisholm, MN
The Stand is a former A&W. The plastic A&W sign is still visible behind The Stand's sign on the pylon.

Joe's on Main Street
Cambridge, MN
Joe's on Main Street, a former A&W Drive-in, opened in 2006. Although the building has been heavily remodeled, the pylon sign is a giveaway to its origins.

former A&W Root Beer
Williamstown, MA
A&W Root Beer
Boulder City, NV
This Williamstown A&W building has been home to Michael's restaurant since 1984.

This Boulder City A&W was built in 1968 and still features the old wedge style roof sign. For more, see this website.

Kluck's Drive-in
Ypsilanti, MI
Kluck's Drive-in occupies a former A&W. I believe this drive-in has been closed since 2009. These photos are from 2011. Kluck's advertised that it offered "affordable quality for over 50 years." I don't know if that means that Kluck's opened here in the 1950s or that A&W did. After leaving the A&W chain, Kluck's featured Rochester Root Beer.

former A&W Root Beer
Danville, IL
This is apparently a former A&W Root Beer. This building has been abandoned for many years.

Simonton Lake Drive-in
Elkhart, IL
Rick's Parkside Drive-in
Palmer, MA
The Simonton Lake Drive-in opened as an A&W in 1965. Around 1973, it became the Simonton Lake Drive-in. The "Root Beer" letters on the canopy appear to have come from a Dog N Suds.

Rick's Parkside Drive-in occupies a former A&W that was built in 1958.
