BURGER CHEF

The first Burger Chef opened in Indianapolis, IN in 1958. By the 1960s, there were locations in 38 states and, by 1969, there were 1,000 locations. But in the 1970s, under the ownership of General Foods, the company went into decline. Many became Hardee's outlets, some became Mr. Cook restaurants. The last operating Burger Chef closed in 1996. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

former Burger Chef
Hazlet, NJ
The former Hazlet Burger Chef and its sign have been converted into Jim's Burger Haven. Unfortunately, the building no longer resembles its googie origins - but a couple of old trash cans remain.

former Burger Chef
Kenova, WV
former Burger Chef
Albuquerque, NM
The former Kenova Burger Chef is now home to a Stewarts Original Hot Dogs. For more, see this page.

The former Albuquerque Burger Chef is now occupied by "Liu Chinese Fast Food". The sign is gone.

former Burger Chef [gone]
Pikesville, MD
The Pikesville Burger Chef was home to the the Pikesville Home & Garden Center for many years. In 2005, it was vacant and used for a TV commercial for the Yellow Book (phonebook). They painted the exterior and created a mock-up counter in the interior (photos second row above, thanks Spencer Stewart). By 2007, the building and sign were gone. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

former Burger Chef
Baltimore, MD
former Burger Chef
Richmond, VA
The Baltimore Burger Chef is now the Roost - a fast food restaurant featuring lake trout ("Bawlmerese" for fried whiting). While the signs and buildings of these two locations have been reworked, they still retain much of their original Burger Chef style.

This Richmond Burger Chef appears to be owned/partially used by the auto repair business next door. The sign no longer remains.

former Burger Chef
Conway, SC
The Conway Burger Chef is now used as Conway Ford's used car lot.

former Burger Chef
Petersburg, VA
The Petersburg Burger Chef has been altered for another restaurant use. [2nd photo thanks Robby Delius]

former Burger Chef
Beaumont, TX
former Burger Chef
Metairie, LA
All that remains of this Beaumont Burger Chef is the sign shape. The building for Seņor Toro's looks nothing like the original restaurant.

The former Metairie Burger Chef, now the Fun Arcade, has the tell-tale roof arch and building style. The sign is long gone.

former Burger Chef
Dothan, AL
This is what remains of two former Houston Burger Chefs.

The Dothan Burger Chef is still recognizeable as Plum's Lounge.

former Burger Chef
Grand Rapids, MI
former Burger Chef
Kenosha, WI
This former Grand Rapids Burger Chef is now home to the Wyoming Outlet Pawn shop. Note the nice adaptation of the Chef on the sign. There were three other locations in Grand Rapids at one time.

There's not much left of this Kenosha Burger Chef which seems to have last been used as Murphy's Pub & Grill.

former Burger Chef
Cleveland, TN
This former Cleveland Burger Chef is now known simply as "The Chef". It is one of the few remaining semi-altered buildings that still serves as a restaurant. Unfortunately, the sign is gone. The "Save-A-Lot" store to the right has a very similar roofline. [bottom photos thanks Michael C. R. Wall]

former Burger Chef
Danville, VA
former Burger Chef
Greensboro, NC
former Burger Chef
Martinsville, VA
This former Danville Burger Chef is now used as the Long River Restaurant. [first photo thanks Robby Delius]

The former Greensboro Burger Chef is now a Mexican restaurant. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

The former Collinsville Burger Chef is now a curtains store. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

former Burger Chef
Austin, TX
This former Austin Burger Chef is now home to Hill-bert's Burgers. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

former Burger Chef
Clovis, NM
This former Clovis Burger Chef is no longer a food-related business. I don't believe the company ever had canopies this long and that this was a later extension.

former Little Nugget Hamburgers
Martinsville, VA
This former Little Nugget Hamburgers, now ATM Motors, is just down the street from the former Collinsville Burger Chef shown above. It appears to be an imitator. Does anyone know more about it? [photo thanks Robby Delius]
