BIFF-BURGER
The Biff-Burger chain was founded in Clearwater, FL in the mid-1950s. Biff stands for "best in food fast". There were hundreds of locations - mostly in the Southeast but lots of others on the East Coast as well. Biff offered "roto-broiled" burgers and their buildings incorporated a W-shaped roof and red, yellow and blue diamonds. The chain folded in the mid-1970s. Many of the closed locations were converted to Burger Kings. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

The only still-operating Biff Burger location is in St. Petersburg. It still offers indoor dining and drive-thru service. Their sign features a Sputnik-type ball on top like those at several Stewart's Root Beers. Biff's is right next door to Buffy's BBQ which features an open-air dining area/bar. They are both popular places with bikers and on Fridays which is Cruise Night. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

In 2006, this former Montgomery Biff-Burger was being converted into Uncle Peter's Seafood & Barbeque. I don't know if they are keeping the checkerboard pattern on the building or the framework of the old sign.

The former Pittsburgh Biff-Burger is not a pretty sight but I'll include it anyway. The original diamond pattern on the front is still visible. The sign is long gone.
The former Bristol Biff-Burger is home to Allen Hodge Motors. The building still has evidence of the diamond pattern above the entrance and the sign has been reworked. |

This former Byron Biff-Burger building was moved here from Warner Robins, GA. It was last used by Buck's Used Cars but has been vacant since at least 1973. Despite its neglect, this building is the most intact of all those that remain.

This Concord Biff-Burger is now a used car lot. It was a Kentucky Fried Chicken for awhile which might be when it got the tower on the roof. [photo/info thanks to Robby Delius]

This Auburndale Biff-Burger most recently housed Richie's Northern Pizza. I don't believe it was open in 2009.

The Cinnamon Sticks Cafe has adapted this former Biff-Burger sign. The building is an ordinary-looking rectangular box.
The Land O' Lakes Biff-Burger is now used as the office for JC Automax, a used car dealer. |

This former Biff-Burger canopy was originally located closer to the river. Sometime after the restaurant closed, the canopy structure that covered the building was moved here. It was installed facing backwards. I don't know what business it was used for at that point. As of this 2010 photo, the lot is unoccupied. The Phenix City location opened in Phenix Plaza in 1963. It later became a Beef Burger.

This Greensboro Biff-Burger is the only other survivor of the chain besides the St. Petersburg location described at the top of this page. This restaurant was renamed "Beef Burger" in the 1980s. For more, see this website.
