| Dairy Isle |
(hit "refresh" to get the most recent version of this page; click on photos for larger images)
| The Dairy Isle chain was based in Wooster, OH. These ice cream stands featured giant cones as the building's central element. The design was created by Clarence S. Shank and patented in 1957. The buildings were shipped as prefabricated kits to be assembled on-site by the owner. |

| Fetter's Dairy Isle west side location opened in 1965. The front part of the building has been enclosed around the cone. This neon sign appears to be unique to this location. The east side location must be owned by the same family. There is a Heath Dairy Isle location in town but it has a more modern building (no cone). |

This Strickland's location is another former Dairy Isle. It was previously the Coney Shoppe as evidenced in the left-hand photo. Before that, it was called "Smiley's". I don't know what became of the wonderful rooftop sign. Strickland's Frozen Custard was founded in 1936 in Akron, OH. Today, they have 13 locations in Ohio, two in Colorado, and one in California. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
This Austintown Dairy Isle has been home to King Kar Motors since 1968. The top of the cone was removed and the roof was built up. [photo thanks Shawn Reagle] |
