DAIRY QUEEN (page 3)

Dairy Queen
Naples, FL
Dairy Queen
Miami, FL

These Naples and Miami buildings are examples of Dairy Queen's A-Frame design. I don't know if these were built before, after or concurrently with the split-roof design. It's possible that these were only made in the South as I have not seen them elsewhere. I only know of one other like this that was in Bradenton, FL and has been replaced with a modern building. [first Naples photo, ca. 1987, thanks Eavenson Art]

Dairy Queen
Port Charlotte, FL

The Port Charlotte Dairy Queen has a squattier A-frame design. My guess is that this one was a later design.

former Dairy Queen
Scottsdale, AZ
This former Dairy Queen opened in 1964. It was part of a tiki strip mall and is referred to as the "Polynesian Dairy Queen" in phone books from that time. As far as I know, this design was unique for DQ. The mall itself was demolished in the 1990s. This building housed an Enterprise Rent A Car for many years but became vacant in 2009. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Richfield, OH
Dairy Queen
Detroit, MI
This Dairy Queen has a tiki-like roof element. I have never seen another one like it.

This Detroit Dairy Queen has a small, box-like building. I suspect this is an old building with a newer pole sign.

Dairy Queen
Wabash Ave.
Terre Haute, IN

Dairy Queen
13th St.
Terre Haute, IN

This Wabash Ave. Dairy Queen uses rooftop letters in lieu of a pole sign. The 13th St. Dairy Queen has rooftop letters, a pole with with a plastic "lips" logo, and this unusual strawberry sundae sign. I have never seen a DQ with either this sundae sign or the bulb-studded boomerang before. I don't know if this was original or created later. The only other location that I know of with this rooftop letters is the one in Austin, IN. Were these letters a regional thing or is this sign style just all but erased now? [photos of 13th St. location thanks Michael Ray]

Dairy Queen
Paris, TX
Dairy Queen
Willcox, AZ

This Paris DQ has an extended canopy that I have not seen before.

This Willcox DQ is being pressured by corporate management to become either a DQ Grill & Chill or to merge with Orange Julius. I don't know if this vintage signage will survive the transformation if it takes place. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Yuma, AZ

This Yuma DQ features more plastic era signage. The photo on the right is of their pole sign.

Dairy Queen
Rochester, MN
Dairy Queen
Hoopeston, IL

The Rochester Dairy Queen is another example of the company's boxy building with plastic signage.

The Hoopeston Dairy Queen has been here since the 1950s. This plastic signage was added later.

Dairy Queen
Mesa, AZ

This Mesa DQ features two rooftop signs: the older porcelain enamel sign and the newer (still vintage) plastic one.

former Dairy Queen
Flint, MI

This Flint building is an example of the split-roofed Dairy Queen. The A-frame structure with a box in front reminds me of a Mister Swiss. The drive-in canopy was added when the business became a "Jr. Varsity Root Beer" (hence, the giant "V"). That lasted about ten years. After that, it was another restaurant and then it became "Maria's Mexican". In 2006 when this photo was taken, the building was being fixed-up for another fast food operation. It looked like the "V" would remain. I'm told that as of 2008, the building is still vacant.

Dairy Queen
Sacramento, CA

This Sacramento Dairy Queen now houses Dino's Dogs & Gyros. Prior to that, it was known as Burger Chief. The building still features the Dairy Queen tile façade. This design's curved roof with wooden beams on the underside is something I have only seen in California. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Redwood City, CA

This Redwood City Dairy Queen is a nicely preserved example of this curved roof style building. This restaurant also has the same red, blue and yellow DQ logos on the tile like the Sacramento location shown immediately above. I don't know if these buildings were built as prototypes or if there were other buildings that are now gone.

Davis, CA
Los Banos, CA

Dairy Queen
Alpena, MI

This Alpena Dairy Queen is housed in a geodesic dome. I was told that this has always been a Dairy Queen and that there were others of this design in the South. Does anyone know more about this? For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
