Dairy Queen
Williams, AZ
Dairy King
Richmond, VA
Dairy Queen
Benson, AZ
Dairy Queen
Detroit, MI
Dairy Queen
Columbus, OH
The Williams Dairy Queen features an unusual embossed plastic pole sign. I assume this style sign in vintage and was mass-produced but I have never seen another one like it. The building's roof appears to have been retrofitted to look similar to the newer type. For more, see this website.

I don't know how many of these round neon Dairy Queen signs are original, altered, or recent replicas. This Richmond Dairy King was probably once a Dairy Queen. It appears that despite the name change, this rooftop sign might be the least transformed of the bunch since it matches this 1950s sign in Boston, MA pretty closely.

The Benson sign photo is from 2007. In 2008, the stand became the Old Benson Ice Cream Stop. The neon was removed and the sign painted over. By 2011, the stand was vacant and the sign was painted white. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

I'm assuming this Detroit sign was originally used by a Dairy Queen. However, the cone seems too small and I doubt those uneven bulbs were part of the original design. It might have been a local stand that copied the Dairy Queen sign design.

This Columbus sign appears to have been a Dairy Queen sign that was adapted for a nail salon. The rectangular piece was probably added to include more text and to avoid confusing customers expecting an ice cream stand.

Dairy Mart Drive Inn
Mineral Wells, TX
Carol's Dairy Bar
Fitchburg, MA
The Dairy Mart Drive Inn sign looks like an imitation Dairy Queen sign.

Carol's Dairy Bar was apparently a Dairy Queen originally. The sign has been adapted.

Snookies Malt Shop
Des Moines, IA
Snookies Malt Shop looks like it was built in the 1950s or 1960s. This sign appears to be an adapted Dairy Queen sign. However, the building does not look like a Dairy Queen. My guess is that Snookies acquired this sign at some point after they opened and had it reworked. This sign is lit at night. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Holbrook, AZ
Dairy Queen
Holdrege, NE
Dairy Queen
Newberg, OR
Dairy Queen
Austin, IN
Dairy Queen
Sioux Falls, SD
I have never seen the Holbrook Dairy Queen sign was probably a modern creation. I have never seen a Dairy Queen sign promoting hamburgers before. It most likely preceded the towering pole sign with the modern logo which is visible from I-40. For more, see this website.

The Holdrege Dairy Queen sign features a tilted cone but on an unusual abstract background. I have never seen this style before. The lettering on the cone is a further indication to me that this is another modern sign.

Likewise, the Newberg and Austin signs seem to be unique and modern signs. The Newberg sign has been here since at least the 1970s when it had an L-shaped, animated arrow around the cone. Note the modern red "lips" logo at the bottom of this cone. Dairy Queen came out with this logo in 1960. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

I believe this Sioux Falls Dairy Queen sign is another modern and unique creation. I have not seen a neon sign with the lips logo before. This photo is from 2008. By 2011, the sign was replaced with a standard plastic sign. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Verona, PA
Dairy Queen
Bowling Green, OH
Dairy King
Norwalk, CT
This Verona Dairy Queen sign features a unique chunky-shaped cone. Their building looks 1980s and this retro style sign might be from then as well.

According to the the owner, Meredith Myles, this Bowling Green Dairy Queen has been here since the 1940s. However, this uniquely-shaped sign must be recent. Both this and the Verona signs have a modern font style especially noticeable in the "Y"s. In vintage Dairy Queen signs, and even in some of the replicas, the Y's are slingshot shaped. For more, see this website.

This Dairy King sundae sign, faded as it is, is clearly a former Dairy Queen sign. It is probably from the 1960s or 1970s. These signs are very rare. The only other one that I know of is in Hibbing, MN.

Dairy Queen
Wilmington, OH
Dairy Queen
Duluth, MN
This round Wilmington Dairy Queen sign must be a modern one or at least a substantially reworked old one. Note the unusual mention of "customer parking". The font size of "Dairy" is smaller than "Queen". Although the sign proclaims this location was established in 1947, the building is unremarkable. It was either rebuilt or significantly altered. The neon of this sign is protected behind clear plastic panels.

I believe all three of these Duluth Dairy Queen signs are reproductions. Either that, or they have been completely refurbished and repainted. The shape and painting of the cone does not match any of the other more vintage signs shown above.

Dairy Queen
Columbia Heights, MN
This Dairy Queen sign is definitely a modern reproduction. I don't know how old this location is.

These Québec Dairy Queens have mini chateau style buildings and porcelain enamel with neon signs. The first DQ opened in Canada in 1953. However, I'm not sure that these signs are all that old. They are all in great shape and lit at night. I have never seen signs or buildings like these in the States. This "Cornet Glace" sign is obviously an adapted DQ sign. For more, see this website.

Dairy Queen
Hibbing, MN
These barn-style Dairy Queens feature the now rare Little Miss weathervane rooftop signs. I believe they were produced in the early 1960s. At the time, female employees wore hats and aprons similar to those of the Little Miss. These signs are five feet tall. Most of them are now missing the weathervane portion. The Mattituck Dairy Queen became the "Magic Fountain" sometime before the 1970s and features homemade ice cream. The Atlanta sign is the most intact of them all. The photos of the Little Miss in Fraser are from 2007. By 2011, the store was closed and all the Dairy Queen signs were removed.

The Hibbing location has an incredibly well-preserved building and signs. Even rarer than the Little Miss sign are the drink and ice cream cup signs on the front of the building.

If you know of any other Little Miss signs out there, I'd love to hear from you.

Dairy Queen
Andover, OH
The Athens and Andover Dairy Queens have lips logo weathervanes. I have not seen these at any other locations but assume they must have been widespread.
