DOG N SUDS DRIVE-INS

There are only about a dozen Dog N Suds left from the 1950s and 1960s. The Dog N Suds empire was founded in 1953 in Champaign, IL. In its heyday of the mid-1970s, there were 600 locations in 38 states and Canada. Most of them were built in the Midwest. By the 1990s, there were only eight left still using the name when the company went bankrupt. A few locations have been built recently. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Richmond, IL

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Tomahawk, WI

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Charleston, IL

This Richmond Dog N Suds Drive-in features car hops, Texas burgers and the "world's creamiest root beer". It opened in 1963.

The Tomahawk Dog N Suds also opened in 1963.

The Charleston Dog N Suds was apparently built around the same time.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Grayslake, IL

The Grayslake Dog N Suds appears to be from the 1960s. For more, see this website.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Ingleside, IL

The Ingleside Dog N Suds was built in 1967. For more, see their website.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Paragould, AR

The Paragould Dog N Suds Drive-in is another old location with the original canopy and sign. The canopy has been boxed up and no longer has the red plastic "Root Beer" lettering. The Char-Co Burger part of this pole sign was evidently not unique. Another exists at a former Dog N Suds in Alsip, IL (see below). I don't know if this neon ice cream cone was a standard addition.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Montague, MI

The Montague Dog N Suds Drive-in opened in 1963 as the company's 316th location. They still have the original building which was remodeled in 2000. There are car hops and drive-through service (no indoor dining). For more, see their website.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Elyria, OH

The Elyria Dog N Suds Drive-in was closed for the season when I saw it in 2006.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
Lafayette, IN

The Lafayette Dog N Suds Drive-in opened in 1956. However, this canopy looks new. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Dog N Suds Drive-in
West Lafayette, IN

The West Lafayette Dog N Suds Drive-in was built in 2005. This sign is also new. The dog faces the wrong way and the arrow uses neon instead of bulbs. For more, see this website.

Coney Hut

Jonesville, MI

Dog N Suds Drive-in
McHenry, IL

former
Dog N Suds Drive-in
Lakeland, FL

The Coney Hut took over this former Dog N Suds in the late 1970s.

McHenry Auto Sales has adapted a Dog N Suds Drive-in sign and canopy.

Harry's Restaurant is another example of an adapted Dog N Suds Drive-in sign.

The Suds
former Dog N Suds Drive-in
Greenwood, IN

The Suds opened in 1957 as a Dog N Suds. It became The Suds in 1983. It has changed owners and closed a number of times over the years. It is now owned and operated by The Suds Hot Rod Club. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Sam's Drive Inn
former Dog N Suds Drive-in
Byron, IL

Sam's Drive Inn is a former Dog N Suds. Does anyone know more about the place?

Swony's Drive Inn (now Doggie Diner)
former Dog N Suds Drive-in
Aurora, IL

Swony's Drive Inn was a former Dog N Suds with an adapted sign. Swony's closed around 2005 and this sign has disappeared. Does anyone know where this sign went or what became of it? The old Dog N Suds canopy is still there and the place has been Doggie Diner since 2006.

Frosted Mug
former Dog N Suds Drive-in
Alsip, IL

The Frosted Mug, a former Dog N Suds, featured car hops, homemade root beer, and Cruise Nights. The business closed in 2008 and remains up for sale in 2009. In 2009, the Frosted Mug part of the sign was removed (photo at right). The Char-co Burgers part was apparently used by the Dog N Suds chain. Another example of it is shown at the Paragould location above. For more, see this website.

B-K Root Beer
former Dog N Suds Drive-in?
Cuyahoga Falls, OH

This B-K Root Beer may have taken over a former Dog N Suds location. The sign is definitely an adapted Dog N Suds sign. It's possible that it came from someplace else. The cinderblock pylon seems more in keeping with the B-K building style. I believe this building has been here since at least the 1950s.

More Dog N Suds Drive-ins:
Loves Park, IL
Robinson, IL: 1, 2
Muskegon, MI: 1, 2
Norton Shores, MI: 1, 2, 3
Cherokee Pass, MO

If you know of others, I'd love to hear about them.
