| Lendy's [gone] Lynchburg, VA |
![]() |
| Lendy's started in 1956 with a small restaurant in Salem, VA. It grew to be a chain with over 50 locations in the mid-1970s. They were famous for their Buddy Boys, Longfellas, onion rings and strawberry pie. Sadly, all the Lendy's are gone now. This Lynchburg location was stripped of its canopies and became an Arby's, and later a Taco Bell. For more, see this website. |

| The first Pal's (top row) opened in 1956 and it remains virtually intact. In the mid-1980s, Pal's stair-step building design with giant food was developed. Their second location, also in Kingsport, has been remodeled and features a Muffler Man on the roof. Pal's now has 18 locations in VA and TN. For more, see their website. |

| This Burger King seems to be a well-preserved original building most likely from the late 1950s. Inside the restaurant is this poster showing the early design. I don't believe there are any of these fantastic neon signs left. Burger King was founded in 1953 and had over 100 locations by 1965. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. |

This Quincy Burger King appears to be a remodeled example of the early design.
This castle-shaped Burger King seems to be an anomaly. I don't know of any others constructed in this style. There is another castle-like building of a different design in Buena Park, CA. |

| Franksville was a Chicago-area chain founded in 1963. There were 15 locations by 1965. This may be the only location left. However, there are many examples of their double-roofed buildings still around, including the Pepe's Mexican Restaurant (another chain with dozens of locations). The locations around Atlanta, GA show that the Franksville chain reached far beyond the Midwest. Does anyone know more about them? For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [ads thanks Robby Delius] |
