Royal Castle was founded in Ohio around 1963, as evidenced by this patent. They had locations in OH, FL, and possibly other states. The location shown in the first row is now a check cashing place. The location in the second row is now a Donut Connection. The final example looks like it has been vacant for awhile. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The first former Whopper Burger shown here now houses Burger Boy. There were at least eight locations in San Antonio at one point. Burger King bought out the company in the mid-1980s and began building their own locations in town. Some of the old Whopper Burger locations were taken over by Murf's Better Burgers. As far as I know, there are only these three buildings left.

Krystal was founded in 1932 in Chattanooga, TN and developed into a Southeastern chain. This Hudson building is an early example, complete with their signature crystal ball over the entrance. The building housed the Bowery Diner when these photos were taken in 2009. A Best of Philly is there now. The Krystal chain continues to expand and now has more than 400 locations. However, there are only a handful of these old buildings left and I don't believe any of them still house Krystal restaurants. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Hot 'n Now Otsego, MI
![]() |
The Hot 'n Now chain was founded in Kalamazoo, MI in 1984. By 1990, there were more than 150 locations in 15 states. After being acquired by Pepsi, the company went bankrupt in 2004. This drive-thru only location has been abandoned for years. The sign on the building reflects the post-2000 Pepsi-redesigned logo. It would have originally looked like this one. There are only about five Hot 'n Now locations still operating (MI: Bay City, Chesterfield, Saginaw, & Sturgis; WI: Marshfield). However, there are still many buildings left that have been repurposed or are still vacant. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.
