Springfield, VT
This Springfield restaurant was built in 1965. In 2003 when these photos were taken, it still retained its finned cupola with the Pieman weathervane. There was also Simple Simon and Pieman artwork near the entrance. The interior featured the original counter and stools, terrazzo floor, as well as the "World of 28 Flavors" glasswork. The adjacent former HoJo's motor lodge had been converted into a modern Holiday Inn. This HoJo's closed and was demolished in 2005. For more, see this website.

The Warren Howard Johnson's was built in 1966. The hotel still uses the original Gate Lodge although it has been remodeled. The restaurant has housed a Foster's Grille since the 1990s. For more, see this website.

This Harrisburg Howard Johnson's opened in 1965. The Gate Lodge has been updated. The steeple and weathervane disappeared around 2009. The motel room row still retains the original balconies and square detailing on the walls. The classic restaurant building next door is now disguised as a Lancaster Brewing Company location. This Niles Howard Johnson's was built in 1960 and remained in operation until around 1977. The motel is now used by Days Inn. The restaurant (not shown) houses Raphael's School of Beauty Culture. For more, see this website.

This West Boylston Howard Johnson's opened in 1964. Although it is now the Classic Suites & Inns, the Gate Lodge remains intact. Many of the features in the rooms are also original. For more, see this website.

Howard Johnson's [closed]
Afton, VA
The Afton Howard Johnson's was built in 1948. The building was updated in the 1960s, removing the original dormers and adding the cupola. It closed in 1998. When the first photo was taken in 2008, the building still had the Lamplighter weathervane. By 2009, the steeple and weathervane were gone. The other three photos are from 2011. In 2003 (top photos), the 1960 Albany Howard Johnson's restaurant was closed and undergoing "renovations". The Lamplighter sign is now gone. As of 2009 (bottom photo), the building was still vacant. The hotel was updated and rebranded as a Ramada Inn. For more, see this website.

This former Williamstown Howard Johnson's is one of the rare Colonial style survivors. There were about 200 built with this design. Although this building is now used as a bank and office space, most of the exterior design and details have been kept. The Simple Simon weathervane also remains.
