Budge's Drive-in opened in 1942. However, this stand looks more 1950s or 1960s so they have probably rebuilt. This sign has been refurbished. It had neon originally.

Herman and Andrew Muldoon began producing and selling in 1938. The name Bonnie Doon Ice Cream was chosen in a naming contest. The company had the first drive-in in the area. It opened in the mid-1940s. Bonnie Doon had other drive-ins in the area but the Lincoln Way West location is the only one left. The East 4th Street location was originally an inter-urban train station. It is now Bonnie Doon's ice cream factory and restaurant. It also offers drive-up service. Bonnie Doon ice cream is available at grocery stores in the area. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Johnsen's Blue Top Drive-in opened in 1936 with a smaller building. The restaurant featured car hops from the beginning. A new building which allowed indoor seating was built in 1963. The canopy was also built at that time. The neon sign is 28 feet tall. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The original Ray's Drive-in building was made from logs and built in 1947. Ray's featured car hops is one of the oldest fast food restaurants in Indiana. The sign which exists today is from 1949. The log-faced building was destroyed by a fire in 1964. The drive-in canopies survived. Today's stone-faced building was constructed in 1965. This photo is from that year. Note that today's building no longer has the tall steeple at the center of the roof or the freestanding letters that spelled out "Ray's Drive-in" along the edge of the canopy. Susie's Southside Drive-in was originally "Miller's Drive-in" and later became "Buckley's Riverside Drive-in". When it was Miller's, the carhops wore roller skates. For more, see this website.
