MARYLAND

Circle Drive-in Ice Cream Company
Baltimore, MD
The Circle Drive-in Ice Cream Company started out as the Circle Drive-in in 1947. The burger joint was a local hang-out but there were no carhops. In 1999, Petrucci's took over the building. When they closed, Joe's Italian Ices took over. As of 2004, new management has brought back the place's original name - well-suited given the building's circular shape. They are talking about restoring the great burger sign.

Snow White Grill
Hagerstown, MD
former Snow White Grill
Frederick, MD
The Hagerstown Snow White Grill opened sometime in the late 1930s. It features a white porcelain enamel façade much like a White Tower or White Castle. It most likely had a blue roof like the one in Frederick.

The former Frederick Snow White Grill opened in 1938 and is now home to the Tajitu Ethiopian restaurant. It was still a Snow White up until around 2003. The interior has been completely gutted and replaced but the exterior is pretty much intact. For more, see their website.

These buildings were part of the Snow White Grill chain which included other locations in Baltimore, MD (2); another in Frederick, MD; Towson, MD; Winchester, VA (still there); and Martinsburg, WV. There may have been others as well. These buildings were produced by the Structural Porcelain Enamel Co. which created Little Taverns, Tom Thumb shops, and A&W Hot Shoppes.

Thrasher's French Fries
Ocean City, MD

Thrasher's French Fries has been around since 1929. They are still on the Rehoboth Beach, DE Boardwalk right where they started - and serving just french fries (and drinks to wash them down). They have expanded to the Ocean City, MD Boardwalk where they have two stands. Don't ask for ketchup - they only believe in apple cider vinegar. Check out the line and local weather at the webcam on their roof.

Anthony's Carryout
Ocean City, MD

Anthony's Carryout Shop first opened in 1954 and specializes in hand-carved roast beef, ham, and turkey. Unfortunately around 2004, the apparently original sign in the top row, upper left was replaced with the sign in the upper right.
