| Planters Peanuts was established in 1906 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The company built hundreds of these shops in the 1930s and 1940s. The most famous were the ones in Atlantic City and New York City. There are several stores that still operate independently which are described below. Two locations from the 1930s in Baltimore, MD and Akron, OH are not shown. In 1961, Planters decided to get out of retail and most of these shops started going by the name of Peanut Shoppe. |

| This Mr. Peanut sign once stood on at the Planters store on Route 1 in Peabody, MA. By the late 1960s, the store had closed and the sign was altered for the Half Dollar Bar. The bar closed in the 1980s and the sign was moved here and restored in 1988. The sign, which is about 30' tall, was also manufactured and installed at other Planters locations but I believe this is the only one left. The Fort Smith location is a processing plant which opened here in 1976. There are smaller Mr. Peanut figures on the fencing at the front of the property. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. |

Dome's Nut Shop has been here about one hundred years. It was never affiliated with Planters. Morrow's Nut House has been here since 1938 but is closing in at the end of 2008. By the 1950s, there were seven locations in San Francisco. This was a nationwide chain at one point. It's not clear how many locations there were or when the company was first established. There are other surviving locations including: Cape May (3) & Ocean City, NJ; Chicago, IL; Ottawa, ON; and various cities in FL. Some previous known locations include: Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; Indianapolis, IN; and Albany & Augusta, GA. For more, see this website. |

Perry's Nut House opened in 1926. It closed in 1997 but reopened in 1998. Unfortunately, while it was closed, Perry's sold its collection of kitschy stuffed animals (the real kind). They are adding some interesting statuary outside the place now and the fudge (that Eleanor Roosevelt was so fond of) is still wonderful. They have tons of other goodies and souvenirs. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
Priester's Pecans was founded in 1935. Their huge store allows customers to observe various pecan confections being made. They also have another location in Perry, GA and offer mail order as well. For more, see their website. |
