NUT SHOPS

Planters Peanuts was established in 1906 in Wilkes-Barre, PA (building demolished in 2006). Planters built hundreds of these shops in the 1930s and 1940s. The most famous were the ones in Atlantic City and New York City. There are several stores that still operate independently which are described below. Two locations from the 1930s in Baltimore, MD and Akron, OH are not shown. In 1961, Planters decided to get out of retail and most of these shops started going by the name of Peanut Shoppe.

Peanut Shoppe
Memphis, TN

This Peanut Shoppe was originally a Planters Peanuts shop built in 1949. This Memphis shop roasts and fries its own peanuts daily. The roaster is in the shape of a giant Mr. Peanut. The shop also sells other candies and nuts and has a nice collection of vintage Planters items. For more, see their website.

Peanut Shoppe

This Memphis Peanut Shoppe opened in 1959 as a Planters Peanuts shop. The building is still basically intact, inside and out. There was once a giant neon sign of Mr. Peanut. For more, see their website.

Peanut Shop
Nashville, TN

The Nashville Peanut Shop opened in the Arcade in 1927 as a Planter's Peanuts shop. It was renamed in 1962. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 2.

A&M Peanut Shop
Mobile, AL

The A&M Peanut Shop was originally part of the Planters Peanut chain. It opened in 1947. All the store's nuts are roasted on-site in a machine from 1907. They also sell a full range of candies and have lots of old photos of downtown Mobile on display. The building itself is from 1886.

Peanut Shoppe
Erie, PA

This Peanut Shoppe is another former Planters store in the Renaissance Center downtown. It features original Planters goodies like this scale, nice old display cases, and original signage.

The Peanut Shop
Lansing, MI
Peanut Shoppe
Charleston, WV
Peanut Shoppe
Huntington, WV

The Peanut Shop opened as a Planters store in 1937. The interior is nicely preserved and features two Planters roasters (still in use).

The Charleston Peanut Shoppe opened in 1950 as a Planters Peanut shop. In 1960, the store changed owners and its name.

The Huntington Peanut Shoppe was also originally a Planters. It has been around since 1924 and is located next door to the Keith Albee Theatre. For more, see this website.

Peanut Shoppe
Columbus, OH

The Peanut Shoppe opened around 1936. It was actually located just down the street and moved here around 1978. The neon sign, which is approximately 4' x 8', was completely restored in 2005. In addition to a full range of nuts and candies, the store features a large display of Planters Peanut collectibles. The store also still uses its original roasting machine. For more, see this website.

Boardwalk Peanut Shoppe
Atlantic City, NJ

Planters Peanuts opened a store on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in 1930. It closed in 1978 and was eventually replaced with the Trump Taj Mahal. The Boardwalk Peanut Shoppe opened in 1972 and carries on the tradition. They use the original Planters roasters and sell lots of Planters Peanuts collectibles. There is also a Mr. Peanut statue on the north end of the Boardwalk. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Mr. Peanut
Fort Smith, AR

This Mr. Peanut sign once stood on at the Planters store on Route 1 in Peabody, MA. By the late 1960s, the store had closed and the sign was altered for the Half Dollar Bar. The bar closed in the 1980s and the sign was moved here and restored in 1988. The sign, which is about 30' tall, was also manufactured and installed at other Planters locations but I believe this is the only one left. The Fort Smith location is a processing plant which opened here in 1976. There are smaller Mr. Peanut figures on the fencing at the front of the property. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Planters Peanut Store [gone]
unknown town, MA
Planters Peanut Store [gone]
near Richmond, VA

These two stores featured giant Mr. Peanut signs like the one described in Fort Smith above. The sign from MA is not the same as the one that was in Peabody, MA.

Peanut Depot
Birmingham, AL

The Peanut Depot opened here in 1907. They offer peanuts, and peanuts only, in four varieties: salted, unsalted, boiled, and Cajun. The roasting ovens are the originals. In the 1930s or 1940s, the business moved slightly down this cobblestoned street. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Holland Peanut Store
Holland, MI
Dome's Nut Shop
Lima, OH

The Holland Peanut Store has been run by the Fabiano family since 1902. They moved here in 1954. Their paddle pops are ice cream covered with chocolate and peanuts.

Dome's Nut Shop has been here about one hundred years. It was never affiliated with Planters.

Perry's Nut House
Belfast, ME
Krema Nut Company
Columbus, OH
Priester's Pecans
Fort Deposit, AL

Perry's Nut House opened in 1926. It closed in 1997 but reopened in 1998. Unfortunately, while it was closed, Perry's sold its collection of kitschy stuffed animals (the real kind). They are adding some interesting statuary outside the place now and the fudge (that Eleanor Roosevelt was so fond of) is still wonderful. They have tons of other goodies and souvenirs. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Krema Nut Company was founded in 1898. It specializes in nuts, butters, chocolates, candies and other snacks. For more, see their website.

Priester's Pecans was founded in 1935. Their huge store allows customers to observe various pecan confections being made. They also have another location in Perry, GA and offer mail order as well. For more, see their website.

For giant peanuts, see this page.
