NEW YORK: ICE CREAM

Hoyer's Ice Cream
Stony Point, NY

Hoyer's Ice Cream features some nice old signage and soft serve. The cone is a nice big sign next to the road.

Big Dip
North Syracuse, NY

The Big Dip looks like it might inhabit a former Carvel building. Quite possibly, another chain took over several Carvel buildings and came up with these giant cones to replace the originals. I have not seen this style cone outside New York. There was another cone like this in Fort Ann, NY. Another possibility is that this location was part of a chain that was inspired by Carvel. For more, see this website.

Arctic Island Ice Cream
Syracuse, NY
Whitebrook Dairy Bar
Wilmington, NY

Supposedly, Arctic Island Ice Cream has been selling homemade ice cream here since the late 1940s when it was known as the Valley Dairy. This building is very Carvel-like and might have been a copycat design. However, I still believe that this was originally a Carvel. In 2007, this stand was nearly demolished for a gas station. For more, see this website.

The Whitebrook Dairy Bar opened in 1968. Their building appears to have been a Carvel. The rooftop cone is the same as the ones at Big Dip and Arctic Island.

Sammy's Ice Cream
Ontario, NY
North Pole Cone & Grill
Geneva, NY
Churi's Ice Cream Parlor
Rochester, NY

Sammy's Ice Cream features an igloo-shaped stand. Their cone looks just like those shown above.

The cone at North Pole Cone & Grill is similar but not the same.

Churi's Ice Cream Parlor features an unusual combination: Thai food and ice cream. They have been here since 2003 but I suspect the giant rooftop cone is from a previous occupant. It doesn't appear to be the same style cone as those at the Big Dip or others shown above.

Ice Cream Man
Greenwich, NY
Purity Ice Cream Company
Ithaca, NY

The Ice Cream Man was originally called the Ice Cream Mann when it was owned by Keith Mann. It started as just the log cabin building with two service windows for ice cream. An addition for indoor seating and a full menu came later. There are now 32 flavors of homemade ice cream.

The Purity Ice Cream Company opened in 1936. It features over 40 flavors of homemade ice cream. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Martha's Motel, Restaurant and Dandee Cream
Lake George, NY

Martha's Dandee Cream is part of a 1950s restaurant, motel and ice cream stand complex. The ice cream here is soft-serve. I don't know which business came first or if they originally used the name of Martha's. The complex was owned in recent years by Six Flags whose Great Escape Amusement Park is directly across the street. However, in 2009, Martha's is independently operated again.

Jones Humdinger
Binghamton, NY

Jones Humdinger had another location in Cortland, NY with this same building style and sign. It is now Leiby's Ice Cream.

Ice Cream Caboose
Groton, NY
American Grand Stand Dairy Bar
Deposit, NY

The Ice Cream Caboose stand is housed in a retrofitted Lehigh Valley caboose. Other than that, the ice cream is nothing special (Hershey's hard ice cream and Crowley's soft-serve). There are quite a number of ice cream stand cabooses around - I guess I should start a list. For cabooses that serve as motels, see this page.

American Grand Stand was previously known as Wheeler's Coney Island Drive-in. It opened in 1948 with soft-serve ice cream and Hire's Root Beer. In 1949, they added hot dogs; in 1950, hamburgers and French Fries. The cone on the roof appears to be the same as the ones at Big Dip and other stands shown above.

Orbaker's Drive-in
Williamson, NY

Orbaker's opened this stand in 1932. They are open year-round, featuring ground steaks, burgers, red hots & white hots (hot dogs with homemade hot sauce), and ice cream. The giant cone seems to be the same as the ones at Big Dip and other stands shown above.

Dairy Haus
Saratoga Springs, NY
Moxie's Ice Cream
Troy, NY

The Dairy Haus features homemade soft and hard ice cream, nice big wooden swings, and an expansive lawn for kids (or, in my case, dogs) to play on.

Moxie's Ice Cream is housed in a stand from the 1930s. It was previously known as Wagar's Dairy and the building was painted all white. The Moxie family has been running it and making their own homemade ice cream since 1969. There are always new flavors - made in 150 gallon batches with vintage equipment. When I was there, there were three different and distinct types of vanilla. There is also a very cool playground for the kids and picnic tables.

Snow Man
Troy, NY

The Snow Man stand has been here since 1957 and still uses the original Emory Thompson machines to make its ice cream.

Mister Shake
Richfield Springs, NY

Mister Shake features an old sign topped by a rabbit and a funky mini golf course.

Varsity Park Ice Cream Island
Dansville, NY
Cooligan's Island
Alden, NY
May's Alterations
Auburn, NY
former photo kiosk?
Muncie, IN

Varsity Park Ice Cream Island, Cooligan's Island, May's Alterations and the Muncie structure were most likely photo developing kiosks from the 1960s/1970s. Does anyone know what company used this style building? All four are located in shopping center parking lots. The Varsity Park Ice Cream Island was previously "Picture Island". Fotomat had similar structures which had a pyramid style roof. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Jahn's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor [gone]
Queens, NY

Jahn's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor was part of a four-location chain that started in the Bronx in 1897. This Richmond Hill location opened in 1923 and was the last one remaining. Its interior was close to original and featured dark carved wood, tulip lamps, ceiling fans and upholstered booths. There was a fantastic no-longer-used piece of equipment that had spigots for various syrups labeled "coffee", "chocolate", etc. In addition to its ice cream offerings, Jahn's was a full-scale restaurant. In 2007, Jahn's closed. In 2009, the building was occupied by Montezuma Mexican restaurant. For more, see these websites: 1 and 3.
