PENNSYLVANIA

Dutch Pantry
DuBois, PA

The first Dutch Pantry restaurant opened in 1945 near Selingsgrove, PA. The chain expanded in the 1950s and 1960s with other locations in PA and FL. At its peak in 1983, there were 52 restaurants in 12 states. There are only two other locations known to still be in operation: Clearfield, PA and Williamstown, WV. Many of the other buildings have been adapted for other restaurants. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Pat's King of Steaks
Philadelphia, PA
Geno's Steaks
Philadelphia, PA

Pat's and Geno's battle it out on opposite corners of the same street. Pat's has been around since 1930 and gets credit for the invention. For those that don't know, a Philly cheese steak is thinly sliced steak and onions on Italian bread, topped with liquid cheese. For more about Pat's, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Geno's Steaks opened in 1966 - right across the street from Pat's. It has its loyal followers as well. For more about Geno's, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. For more about Philadelphia's cheese steaks, see these websites: 1 and2.
