Mac's Drive-in was built in 1961. It was originally closer to downtown Waterloo and was moved here in 1967. Mac's still has its original Richardson Root Beer sign. It is best known for its burgers, fried chicken, fresh cut fries and floats. There are two carhop "runs" with enough room for 64 cars at a time. The main building has glass panel sides that can be removed in good weather. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
Richardson Root Beer started in Rochester, NY in the 1940s with a small stand. I believe there are only two other locations left (see below). For more, see this website. |

Hamburger Heaven opened in 1948. They still make Richardson Root Beer in oak barrels. For more, see this website. |

Gene's Root Beer Stand has always been Gene's and opened in 1966. For a night shot of their sign, see this website.
Tom Wahl's is famous for its homemade ice cream, frosty mugs of root beer, and gut-busting Wahlburgers. It has expanded to nine locations. This one in Avon was first, built in 1955. It also featured a mini golf course at one time. |
