| The Airplane Filling Station was built in 1930 by the Nickle brothers. The faux airplane's wing acted as a canopy over the pumps. The station was sold in the 1970s and was used as a package store, a produce stand, a bait shop and a used car lot. The Airplane Filling Station Preservation Association is working on the building's restoration. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. | Art Lacey's Bomber Gas Station features a WWII B-17 bomber as canopy. The plane weighs 32 tons, is 75' long and has a wingspan of 104'. Mr. Lacey worked on planes during WWII but he was not a great pilot and crashed the first two surplus planes that he attempted to bring to this site. The gas station opened in 1947, followed by the Bomber Drive-In in 1948. The station started out with five pumps but eventually had 40. Although it closed in 1991, the original family still runs the restaurant and the plane is still on display. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. |
