Kentucky Gas Stations: Ice Boxes & Later

(hit "refresh" to get the most recent version of this page; click on photos for larger images)

former Gulf station
London, KY
This former Gulf station was vacant when these photos were taken in 2007. The adjoining lot has a building with the same blue and white porcelain enamel (photo on right above). I assume it was built in conjunction with the Gulf station for additional bays.

former Pan-Am station
Cave City, KY
This former Pan-Am station looks like it's been abandoned for many years. For more, see this website.

former Shell station
somewhere on the Dixie Highway, KY
This former Shell station has also been stripped. This was one of the extremely rare occasions where I did not write down the name of the town that this was in. If anyone knows that, or anything else about this station, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

former Sunoco station
Louisa, KY
This former Sunoco station no longer sells gas but the owner has left the signs up. There are only a handful of these caduceus signs still on display.

Duff's Service
Lexington, KY
There was a Texaco station on this lot in 1937. In the 1940s, it was replaced with a Shell station. Duff's Service opened here in 1952 with this Aetna station. By the 1970s, Duff's was operating as an Ashland Oil station.

Denny's Auto Center
Lexington, KY
Denny's Auto Center is another former Ashland Oil station. The fourth bay on the right was a later addition.

former Phillips 66 station
Winchester, KY
This former Phillips 66 station is an early, small version of the company's batwing station. There were originally freestanding "Phillips 66" letters on the canopy. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
