MAINE: ICE BOXES & LATER

Gulf station
Wells, ME
former Gulf station
Portland, ME

The Wells Gulf station still sells gas and goes by the name of Robert Brown Gulf which is incorporated into the original building design. Their freestanding Gulf sign looks new but it appears to be mounted on the original post.

This Portland Gulf station is one of three that were converted into Angelone's pizza restaurants. This is called Angelone's North location while this one in Portland is known as Angelone's South. The third one is located in Westbrook, ME.

Bubble Room Laundromat
Portland, ME

The Bubble Room Laundromat was originally a Flying A gas station. Before the Bubble Room, it was known as the Bramhall Laundry and the S&B Norge Village Laundromat. For more, see this website.

Bob's Auto Sales & Service
Bangor, ME

Bob's Auto Sales & Service is now a Citgo station and repair shop. The office interior has an Esso logo on the floor (not the best photo - shot through the glass when the place was closed). This tile was probably laid after 1965 when Esso began using a brighter blue border. The exterior has what seems to be the original clock and glass block. I believe that the office corner was once curved.

Sunoco station
Wells, ME

The Wells Sunoco features fantastic, preserved signage. The wooden shingles and bay windows are obviously much more recent additions. The Sun Oil Company (later known as Sunoco) used the caduceus in its logo as a reference to its "Mercury Refined" motor oil. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Mobil station
Biddeford, ME

The Biddeford Mobil has an incredible, huge vertical sign. I would peg it as 1960s although I have never seen a Mobil sign like this before. There is a similar Sunoco sign in Cambridge, MA.
