This former Lexington station is now occupied by G&G Wireless. It was built pre-1925 as a Gulf station.
In addition to selling gas, this former Shell station was home to the Beam Trucking Company office. The company was started in 1932 and grew into the Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation which is still in business. This station is now part of the C. Grier Beam Truck Museum next door. The station is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. For more, see this website.

This Texaco station was built in 1934. The first photo is from 2006 before the building was restored and taken over by Mr. Cones. There is a nostalgic Sinclair pump there now but I don't know if this was ever used as a Sinclair station. Gas was last sold here in the 1960s. A pest control business was here after that. former Shell Station Winston-Salem, NC |
The Shell Station is the last remaining of eight oversized shell-shaped buildings built around Winston-Salem by the Quality Oil Company between 1930 and 1933. At the time, Shell was a brand name for Quality Oil. It cost $5,000 to build the concrete structure crafted around a wood and wire frame. It stands 16' tall and is 20' wide. The Shell Station was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was damaged and boarded up in 1996, when it got a grant for restoration. Preservation North Carolina saved it from destruction, restored it and turned it into their regional office. They peeled away the paint and matched Shell's original yellow-orange color. They also restored the adjacent car wash: a wooden trellised structure allowing cars to be washed and serviced in the shade. The restored pumps and replica lamp posts were donated by Quality Oil Company. There are many old photos of the station inside the office. For more, see this website.
I don't believe this Shell Station was ever built. But its 1929 design may have influenced the others.

former Gulf station Durham, NC |
This Gulf station was built in the early or mid-1930s and remained in operation until the 1970s. It has been abandoned since at least the late 1990s. It was known as Fletcher's Gulf station and the middle part of the building between the two bays was used as a combination office and bar. In 2010, restoration work on the building began. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
