former Esso station Raleigh, NC |

Tao Auto left this former Raleigh station for a larger, modern building. Previously Gibbon's Esso, things don't look good at the moment for this place.

former Hayes Gulf Service Forest City, NC |

The Hayes Gulf Service is now part of the Western Auto (auto supply) next door. The Hayes' retired sometime in the 1980s and sold the station to Western Auto next door. I have not seen a double canopy Gulf before and don't know how common they were.

former Phillips 66 station Durham, NC |

In 1994, this double-canopied Durham Phillips 66 was converted into the Mad Hatter's Cafe and Bake Shop. The original station would have looked like this one in Webster Groves, MO. For more, see their website. [photos thanks Robby Delius]

Chevron station Shelby, NC |
former Mobil station Denton, NC |

This Chevron station has a central, projecting sign column typical of Shell stations. It was originally a Cities Service (later Citgo) station - probably built in the late 1950s. Above the office, would have been "Cities Service" lettering separated by a cloverleaf logo. Above the garage, it would have read "For People Going Places". I'm not sure how long this station has been a Chevron. The sign looks like a recent addition placed over the outline of the former one. For more, see this website.
This former Mobil station has the now very rare mushroom canopies and functioning cylindrical pumps. For more about these Mobil stations, see this page. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

abandoned canopy Charlotte, NC |
canopy Rocky Mount, NC |
 |
 |
This abandoned Charlotte canopy may have been part of a gas station. However, the building on the property, occupied by Mac's Automotive Electric, does not look like it was ever a station. This canopy is also set back a bit from the road. Maybe there was a second one closer at one time? This canopy looks similar to several at these websites: 1 and 2.
This Rocky Mount canopy stands at B&R Auto Sales. It dates from the early 1960s when it was part of a Fina station. It last sold gas around 1990.
