former Shell station
Advance, NC
former Shell station
Williamston, NC
This former Shell station in Advance now houses R&M Auto Repair.

This former Shell station in Williamston is now used as an Enterprise car rental location.

These stations would have looked like these originally: 1 and 2.

former station
China Grove, NC
This former station appears to be a Shell station with the pylon chopped off.

former Esso station
Kinston, NC
former Esso station
Kinston, NC
These former Esso stations have been here since the late 1940s.

former station
Albemarle, NC
I believe this former station was originally an Amoco. It now houses Eury's Tree Expert Service.

Pure Oil station
Denton, NC
This Pure Oil station has covered up Chevron logos with their own. I don't know if this was originally a Chevron station.

former Travelers station
Kinston, NC
This former Travelers station now houses Real Deal Tires. It was built in the early 1950s. About 25 of this design were built in eastern NC, some with canopies and some without. [vintage 1960s photo thanks Wayne Henderson]

former Cities Service station
Shelby, NC
This former Cities Service station was built in the late 1950s. Above the office, there would have been "Cities Service" lettering separated by a cloverleaf logo. Above the garage, it would have read "For People Going Places". This station became a Citgo station. It was used as a Chevron station in 2004. By 2010, there were no brands visible but the station was still pumping gas and performing repairs. For more, see this website.

former station canopy
Rocky Mount, NC
This Rocky Mount canopy stands at B&R Auto Sales. It dates from the early 1960s when it was part of a Fina station. Another source says this was originally a Tiga staion which had three or four stations with canopies like this in town. This station stopped selling gas around 1990.

former station canopy
Charlotte, NC
I believe this Charlotte canopy was originally used by a gas station on this site. I have seen similar gas station canopies with two and three spear-like supports like this - but never four of them. The first photo above is from 2004 when the property was owned by McCullough Auto Electric. By 2010, second photo, the canopy had been restored by Mac's Speed Shop, the BBQ restaurant now located at the site. Does anyone know if there was a gas station here and, if so, what brand was sold?

Mobil station
Thomasville, NC
Mobil station
Thomasville, NC
These two Thomasville Mobil stations still feature now very rare mushroom canopies. The one on the left is known as "Downtown Mobil" while the one on the right with two canopies is the "Unity Mobil".

Mobil station
Denton, NC
This Denton Mobil station has the mushroom canopies and original still-functioning cylindrical pumps. For more about these Mobil stations, see this page.

former Mobil station
Pinebluff, NC
While the round canopies have been removed at this former Mobil station, there are still two functioning round pumps at the back of the lot used for kerosene and off-road diesel. There are Mobil markings on back of them. This is now a Rex station. [photos thanks Robby Delius]

former station
Fayetteville, NC
This former station was originally a Pam Oil station. It was designed by J. Hyatt Hammond and built in 1956. Pam Oil was a local, private brand used for a short time by the Amoco distributor. In later years, this station was a Tenneco and an Amoco. I believe this building has been vacant since at least 2007. The concrete, hyperbolic paraboloid roof was inspired by Eduardo Catalano. The same style roof appears at the Vickers station in Haysville, KS. These Orbit stations in California are even more flamboyant. [vintage photo thanks Wayne Henderson]
