PENNSYLVANIA: ICE BOXES & LATER

Donati's Gulf station
Arnold, PA

Donati's Station is an example of Gulf's version of the classic design (see this sketch from 1949). Donati's was most likely built in the early 1950s. Gulf kept a teensy bit more Deco detail than Texaco's stripped down box. Gulf stations had rounded edges and a slightly projecting office. Also note the same style of lettering signage used in the earlier Dunkle's Gulf.

Ron Brown Gulf
Tamaqua, PA

Ron Brown Gulf is a marvelous, well-preserved classic icebox station. However, its pumps are gone and it is now just a repair shop.

former Sinclair station
Tyrone, PA

This former Sinclair station is now Hamer's Garage. The station started out as a Sinclair castle style canopy circa 1920s. The canopy was removed at some point and the building covered with porcelain enamels panels. For more, see this website.

Myers's Service Center
Strasburg, PA

The Myers's Service Center is probably an updated older station. To keep costs down, many oil companies simply added modern false fronts. Note also the bi-level heights of the office and service bay buildings which was not typical of icebox design. Sometime before it was Myers's, it was an Esso station.

former Esso station [gone]
Irwin, PA
former Esso station (now Back East)
Irwin, PA

The Klanchar brothers owned three different stations on a small stretch of the Lincoln Highway. There was one, originally owned by John Serro, at the bottom of the hill which was built in 1932. It was torn down during road construction in 1938. Emil Klanchar immediately built another one, shown in the top row of photos, which his brother Anthony bought from him in 1945.

Anthony also built this second Esso station further up the hill in 1949. The building is lovingly maintained by Back East, a truck accessories business. There was a very similar looking Esso station in Wise, VA. In comparing the two stations, it appears that the Klanchar station added the pitched roof and shingles over the office window at some point. The clocktower design seems a little rarer Esso design from the photos I've seen.

former Minute Man station
Wexford, PA

This former Minute Man station is now used as Bauerle's Greenhouse, a garden shop. The building is in pretty poor shape and is surrounded by new development. For other examples of this style building, see this page.

former Minute Man station
Beaver, PA
former Minute Man station
Beaver Falls, PA

The Beaver former Minute Man station is in much better shape than the Wexford station described above. This is now a Kwik Fill station.

The Beaver Falls Minute Man station is now vacant and obstructed with an ugly canopy.

former Minute Man station
Corry, PA

The Corry former Minute Man station is now operating as a Kwik Fill station.

Sunoco station
Frackville, PA
former Mobil station
Allentown, PA

This nicely maintained Sunoco station is still selling gas and performing repairs.

These Mobil station canopies have been adapted by a LUKOIL station. There are very few of these mushroom canopies left and I don't believe any of them are still in use by Mobil. They were designed by Eliot Noyes in the late 1960s. For more info, see this example that was in Hamden, CT.

former Texaco station
Ashland, PA
former Union 76 station
Reading, PA

This former Texaco is now used as a repair garage.

This former Union 76 station now serves as a Maier's bakery outlet. The office functions as a store while the former service bay(s) are used for distribution storage. Maier's has owned the building since at least the 1980s.

Double Wide Grill
Pittsburgh, PA

The Double Wide Grill was built as a gas station in 1939. The exterior features a simulated Texaco stars and some stripes but I don't know if it was a Texaco originally. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
