STANDARD OIL RED CROWN STATIONS

There are about seventeen Standard Oil "Red Crown" stations left. I don't know how many were originally built. These stations were built in the 1920s and 1930s. The buildings have beige glazed brick and red tile roof details. The roofline peaks make them instantly recognizable. Most of these remaining stations are in the Midwest, however, at least one was built as far west as Colorado. If you know of any that are not shown here, regardless of condition and even if they no longer exist, I'd love to hear about them.

Red Crown Mini-Museum
formerly Jonesy's Standard Station
Lafayette, IN

The Red Crown Mini-Museum is housed in a former 1927 Red Crown station. This station was built with one garage bay. In 1936, a second garage bay was added. The station closed in 1979. In 1985, the Tippecanoe County Library bought the property with plans to turn it into a parking lot. The library used the station for storage for awhile and then in 1991, Don Stein, a local business man and car collector stepped in to buy the station and have it restored.

It was supposed to take 18 months and $350,000 to restore the station but with the help of local volunteers, it was done in two months and cost less than $60,000. During the restoration, the original roof tiles were found in a warehouse in Ohio and were provided for free. The station currently operates as a museum with Red Crown and Standard gasoline memorabilia and features antique cars from Stein's collection. For more, see this website.

former Standard Oil Station
Port Huron, MI

The former Port Huron Standard Oil, aka Jim's Standard Station, was built in 1922. The restored station is filled with gas station memorabilia and functions as a visitors' information center.

former Standard Oil Station
Coldwater, MI

The restored, former Coldwater Standard Oil now houses Home Health Professionals, a medical office. I assume it was also built in the 1920s. For more, see this website.

former Standard Oil Station
Dearborn, MI

This former Dearborn Standard Oil is most likely also from the 1920s. Shortly after the photos in the top row were taken in 2005, the building was demolished and "recreated" (bottom row of photos) to make more room for pumps and a convenience store. It had been an Amoco and is now a BP station.

former Standard Oil Station
Monroe, MI

This former Monroe Standard Oil is now Joe's Standard Service. The business still offers repairs but no longer sells gas. For more, see this website.

former Standard Oil Station
Grosse Pointe Park, MI

This former Grosse Pointe Park Standard Oil has been vacant for years. Does anyone know more about this building? This building and the one in Burlington below are the only stations of this type that I know of with these central tower-like features. For more, see this website.

former Standard Oil Station
Sturgis, MI

This former Sturgis Standard Oil is now home to Barnell's Quality Carpets. The canopy station shown above preceded this building. [vintage photos from Barnell's]

former Standard Oil Station
Lansing, MI

This former Lansing Standard Oil was last used as Bozzo's Auto Sales. As of 2007, it looks like this former station has been vacant for several years.

This former Pontiac Standard Oil is now used as a law office. [photos thanks Daniel Medrano]

former Standard Oil Station
St. Louis, MO

This former St. Louis Standard Oil was also vacant in 2006.

former Standard Oil Station
Vienna, IL

This former Vienna Standard Oil is now vacant. I believe it was used as Ned's Shed (a deli) somewhat recently. It could really use a serious restoration.

former Standard Oil Station
Aurora, IL

This former Aurora Standard Oil is occupied by Benton Auto Sales.

Sioux Falls, SD
former Standard Oil Station?
Pinconning, MI

This former Sioux Falls Standard Oil station now houses Diamond Dan's Casino.

This former former Pinconning station looks like it might have been a Standard Oil at one time.
