TENNESSEE: CANOPIES

former station
Knoxville, TN

This Knoxville station is now occupied by North Hills Produce.

former Rose Service Station
Tazewell, TN

The Rose Service Station was built in 1930 by Carson Rose. It closed in 1956. The station was restored by the town in 2001 and serves as a mini museum of petroliana. The exposed brick with lighter colored brick inlay was typical of the Gulf canopy design. For more, see this website.

former station
Knoxville, TN

This former station is west of Knoxville on Highway 70. According to the plaque on the larger column, this stone station was built by Frank Kinger in 1931. Its interesting triangular shape fits the intersection of two streets. This station appears to have been vacant, with pumps removed, for many years and it's a matter of time until it crumbles to the ground.

former gas station
Murfreesboro, TN

This Murfreesboro station is now home to a discount tobacco/convenience store. This one had to be another Sinclair and has a tiny bit more detail and original feel than the Warren station above.

former Sinclair station
East Ridge, TN

This Ringgold station is now home to Griffin's Footlong Hot Dogs. It was originally a Sinclair, built in 1930. Prior to the hog dog place, it was Melissa's Garden and Gift.

former Sinclair station
Newbern, TN

This Newbern station was originally a Sinclair. It is now used as a repair shop. For more, see this website.

former Gulf station
Soddy-Daisy, TN

This nicely-maintained Soddy-Daisy station is now A-One Automotive. It was built in the 1930s and was previously Layne's Gulf station. The bay building at the left was built in 1938 as a radio shop. [info & first photo thanks Darryl Grant]

former station
Memphis, TN

This former Memphis station features an enormous canopy. It now houses the Autobahn Garage, a repair shop specializing in German made cars. For more, see this website.

former station
Cowan, TN

This Cowan station was being restored in 2007 when this photo was taken. The pumps have been removed.

former station
Jackson, TN

This Jackson station is now home to the Who Does Your Hair hair salon. Prior to that, it was Toone's Fish Market. My guess is that this double-canopied building is from the 1930s. The building next door with the same brickwork (third photo) must have been for repairs. It appears to be vacant now.
