former station Richmond, VA |
This former station was known as the Triangle Filling Station, named after the triangular lot that it occupied. Although some believe that this building is from 1923 and was the prototype for Pure Oil's other cottage style stations, the facts disprove this. It has been well documented that the first Pure Oil cottage was built in Indianapolis in 1927. If the build date of this station is 1923, then it was built for another oil company since Pure Oil didn't market in Virginia until later. This station operated until 1953, possibly as a Pure Oil. In 1955, a small restaurant occupied the building. Around 1968, the addition was made to the front for a BBQ take-out restaurant. The building has been vacant since 2009. If anyone has vintage photos of this station, or concrete evidence of its branding, I'd love to hear from you.

This Pure Oil station has been occupied by the Patisserie Cafe since 2007. Before that, it housed Smokin' Pete's Bar-B-Que Station and Joe's Firehouse Bar-B-Que. The building still has many original details including the blue tile roof and the "P"s on the chimney. For more, see this website.

Fitzgerald Truck & Equipment is another former Pure Oil station. The chimneys are wider and the roof features a weathervane tower. I don't know if this building style was used simultaneously with the other type. [top photos 2003; bottom photos 2007]

former Pure station and cottages? (closed) Atkins, VA |
This may have been a severely altered former Pure station. Hard to tell with only one chimney left and the roof missing. Most likely the cottages adjacent to it were part of a gas station/motel complex like Sanders Court or the Pure Village Court.
