ALABAMA: MUFFLER MEN

Pioneer
Moody, AL
This Pioneer was once seated on the covered wagon at a Wagon-Ho!, a short-lived fast food chain in the mid-1960s. His upraised hand originally held a whip while his other hand held reins. This statue is now on display in front of Cherry Construction.

Another example of this type is at Gulf Golf in Treasure Island, FL. There are also three standing versions in NC.

Muffler Man
Birmingham, AL
This Birmingham Muffler Man, aka "Stan", has been moved around town a few times. In 1998, he was located on a rooftop next to I-65 at a different tire store where he held a couple tires. Strong winds knocked his upper torso to the ground and he had to be repaired. He now stands next to the GCR Tire Center. He was repainted to match GCR's uniforms. I guess his white-painted hands are meant to look like gloves. For more, see this website.
