ARIZONA: MISC. GIANTS

Hobo Joe
Buckeye, AZ
Hobo Joe is a 40' tall statue that stands next to Gillums Meat & Locker Co, a slaughterhouse. There is plaque indicating that he was installed in memory of Marvin Ransdell (1928-1988). Ransdell owned the company that produced the Hobo Joe's statues and willed this big one to his friend, Ramon Gillum. The character was the icon for the now defunct coffee shop chain which was headquartered in Tempe, AZ. The first location was in Scottsdale, AZ with about a dozen others built in the late 1960s. Each restaurant had an identical 5' tall statue in front. However, two or three locations had 25' tall versions. I have found two examples of the smaller statues: one at the Arizona Railway Museum (Chandler, AZ) and another at an auction site. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Iron Man
Bisbee, AZ
The Iron Man statue was installed in 1935. Bisbee was once a big copper mining town and this statue is a tribute its miners. For more, see this website.
