CONNECTICUT: MUFFLER MEN

House of Doors
Cheshire, CT
The Cheshire Man beat local zoning laws by holding a flag. He was considered a flagpole rather than a sign. Originally, the statue stood in front of tire stores in Bristol and Plainville, CT. He was moved here in the late 1970s. At that time, the owners of House of Doors operated a tree service so the Paul Bunyan was an appropriate advertisement. In 2006, his upper torso was either removed or fell off. The pants in the first photo were still standing by themselves in 2007. By 2009, the statue was completely restored. His flagpole now resembles just a piece of pipe. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

In 2008, the House of Doors purchased another Muffler Man for their Salem, CT location. However, city zoning prohibits displaying the statue so it is now in storage at the Cheshire store. This Muffler Man was previously located in Bridger, MT.

Muffler Man
Norwich, CT
Giant cowboys were a less common variation created by International Fiberglass. The Norwich Man moved to this shopping center around the 1980s. He stands between EbLens and Surplus Unlimited. In the 1960s, he was located across town. He holds a flag in the style of the Cheshire, CT man mentioned above, perhaps to get around zoning laws as well. Surplus Unlimited has painted an image of the Muffler Man on their trucks. For more, see this website.
