GIANT WOMEN

Miss Uniroyal
Werbany’s Tire Town
Blackwood, NJ
Miss Uniroyal is an 18' tall International Fiberglass statue. The "Big Broad" (as the tire guys used to call her) is protected from high winds with two chains from her shoulders to an overhead pole. The owners say they were offered $6,000 for her but they turned it down. She was previously in Lancaster, PA and has been here since 1965. In 2007, she was repainted and transformed into Nitro Gal (photos in bottom row). "Nitro" refers to the nitrogen tire inflation system that Werbayn's uses. For more, see this website.

Miss Uniroyal
Reid Bethel Tire Co.
Lamesa, TX
This Mount Vernon Miss Uniroyal stands next to Stan the Tire Man. She was once located at the Stan the Tire Man in Salem, IL with the Muffler Man there.

This Lamesa Miss Uniroyal stands in front of Reid Bethel Tire Co. She has been painted to look like a Lamesa Golden Tornadoes cheerleader. For more, see this website.

Miss Uniroyal
Peoria Plaza Tire
Peoria, IL
This Miss Uniroyal, aka "Vanna Whitewall", stands in front of Peoria Plaza Tire where she has been since 1968. She was restored in 1988. In 2005, she was hit by a car and had some damage to her right leg. She has since been repaired. Vanna changes outfits with the seasons: a sweater and skirt for the cold weather months and a bikini for summer. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Miss Uniroyal
Men's Night Out
Rocky Mount, NC
The Miss Uniroyal stood for many years at a motel in town. Then in 2000, she was moved to Men's Night Out (a private men's club). While the beach ball is original, when she was moved, her bikini bottom became hot pants, she went from a brunette to a blonde, and she acquired a belly ring (now missing). For more, see this website.

Waitress
Silver Creek, NY
Fran's Hamburgers [gone]
Austin, TX
The Giant Waitress stands among the plaster statuary being sold in front of Valvo's Candies. She is about 12' tall. Her name is "Dolly Dimples" and she has been here since at least the mid-1970s. She is believed to have originally been just down the road at Pat's Drive-in (a restaurant, now gone).

Fran's Hamburgers opened in 1973. Actually, its was Dan & Fran's Hamburgers first but when they divorced each took half of the burger chain. This 8' tall Fran statue stood on the roof of the drive-in canopy. She was created by Blue Genie Art in 1997. She fell in 2006 and got broken pretty badly. The restaurant isn't sure if they will be restoring or replacing her. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Waitress
Flint, MI
This Giant Waitress, aka "The Big Girl", stands on top of the sign at the Colonial Coney Island and Family Restaurant. She has been there since 1978. For more, see this website. [fourth photo thanks Mark Comstock]

Pie Woman
Frackville, PA
The Pie Woman and her clutching daughter were built for Hamburg, PA’s Pot-O-Gold Diner. When it closed, the statue was brought here to Granny's Restaurant and Motel. The woman is about 15' tall. The child holds a rather creepy decapitated doll. Around 2007, the figures were repainted orange and gold. More than likely, this statue was created by Rod Shutt who created many other PA giants.

Minnehaha
Elkins, WV
Princess Noccalula
Noccalula Falls, AL

Pocahontas
Pocahontas, IA
Minnehaha has stood in front of Hiawatha's (a souvenir shop) for many years. She has been there since at least the 1980s. The statue has fallen over a couple times and been repaired.

This bronze statue of Princess Noccalula is a memorial to a legendary Indian maiden. She jumped to her death in these falls when her father forbid her to marry the man she loved. For more, see this website.

Pocahontas, a reference to the Indian Princess and the town's namesake, was erected in 1954. She stood in front of Nielsen's Souvenirs which operated out of a concrete teepee (now gone). She is 25' tall from the base of the platform to the top of her head and 7 1/2' across at the skirt and shoulders. Pocahontas was designed by W.C. Ballard who also designed the Lucette statue in Hackensack, MN. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

There is another Indian Maiden in Picacho, AZ.

Mammy's Cupboard
Natchez, MS
Mammy's Cupboard is a restaurant designed as a 28' tall black woman with a 20' diameter skirt (originally yellow). She was built in 1939 as a tourist attraction addition to Henry Gaude's Shell gas station. Gaude drew the sketch and built the structure out of wood and tin. The bricks and wood came from a torn down cotton gin. The building was designed to serve sandwiches and drinks especially during the annual Natchez Pilgrimage of Homes. Mammy's arms and tray were added years later. Her eyes were illuminated by light bulbs and horseshoes were originally used as earrings. It was run by family members for years and is now only open for lunch.

The building has seen its share of hard times. In 1943, it closed and was used for storing hay. In 1947, it reopened as a drive-in with carhops. I'm not sure when the gas pumps disappeared but they were there, though looking antique and non-functional, in the late 1970s. For awhile, Mammy's paint was peeling badly and her arms had fallen off, but she has recently been restored. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Mermaid
Mounds View, MN
Pioneer Woman
St. Paul, MN
This fiberglass Mermaid is 30' tall and stands on the roof of the Mermaid Entertainment and Event Center. She was built in 1967 for the Mermaid Supper Club. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Mermaid
North Myrtle Beach, SC
The Myrtle Beach Mermaid is part of the sign at The Curious Mermaid, a home and garden gift shop. The mirror and comb are mermaid symbols (representing female vanity). For more, see this website.

Mama's Used Cars
Charleston, SC
I usually wouldn't include inflatable people or things at my website but this one is pretty special. Mama's Used Cars uses the likeness of their 80-something owner in its signage and advertising. For more, see this website.
