Vollis Simpson has been building these whirigig sculptures on his farm in Lucama, NC since his retirement in 1985. Simpson is now in his 90s and has built thousands of these wind-activated sculptures. Many are installed at museums around the country. In 2010, Simpson sold many of his creations to the nearby City of Wilson which plans to install them in a park. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
