Mission, KS
former Safeway
Kansas City, KS
This Safeway sign in Independence was reworked for Sun Fresh Market.

This Safeway in Mission housed a Wild Oats Natural Marketplace until closing in 2007. This sign was adapted by Wild Oats but has been painted black since they left.

This Safeway building and sign in Kansas City were adapted for Christ's Church of the Jesus Hour.

I believe all three of these signs were from the 1960s and would have been accompanied by Marina style stores (see below).

All of the Safeway buildings shown in the section below were built in the "Marina" style, named after San Francisco's Marina Boulevard store.

Safeway
San Francisco, CA
This Safeway supermarket on Marina Blvd. was built in 1959 and was the first of this type. The mosaic murals were created by John Garth. They depict food being transported from the four corners of the globe. Garth created murals for three other Safeway stores.

Safeway
San Francisco, CA
The Market Street Safeway in San Francisco opened in 1954. It is still operating as a Safeway. The building was updated in the Marina style in the 1960s. This tower sign has been here since the store opened. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

former Safeway
Fresno, CA
This former Safeway in Fresno opened in 1964. This location became the Ventura Market around 1985. Since Ventura and Safeway have the same number of letters, they were simply replaced. Much of the original interior remains. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Wichita, KS
This former Safeway supermarket is now used as the Midtown Community Resource Center. The old Safeway sign is missing. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

former Safeway
Wheat Ridge, CO
This former Safeway now houses the Family Thrift Center.

former Safeway
Sedalia, MO
This former Safeway supermarket is now a Woods supermarket.

Safeway
Portland, OR
former Safeway
Denver, CO
This Safeway in Portland is one of many Marina style buildings left in the Pacific Northwest. This one was built in 1967. For more, see this website.

The former Safeway in Denver was behind chain link fencing when this photo was taken in 2012. In 2013, it was being renovated as a Vitamin Cottage.

Safeway
Eureka, CA
This Safeway features the original mosaic logo on their building.

Safeway
Bothell, WA
This Safeway is remarkably well-preserved inside and out. These photos are from 2008. In 2011, this store closed. It was announced that this building would be demolished since a new location opened nearby.

Safeway [gone]
Vancouver, BC
This Safeway opened in 1966. Around 2012, the store was demolished and sign removed. Condos and a new Safeway were being built. I don't know of any other locations that still had this style sign. For more, see this website.
