VIRGINIA: DOMES

Norfolk SCOPE Arena
Norfolk, VA
The Norfolk SCOPE Arena was built in 1970-1972, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi. It is 440' long and 110' high, enclosing 85,000 square feet and made of reinforced concrete. It bears a resemblance to Nervi's Palazzetto Dello Sport in Rome, Italy, built in 1956-1957 for the 1960 Summer Olympic Games. The SCOPE hosts conventions, concerts, sporting events, and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Nervi designed the adjoining theater around the corner at the same time. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
