THEME MOTELS & HOTELS

Madonna Inn
San Luis Obispo, CA

Caveman Room Tall & Short Room Buffalo Room
The Madonna Inn has 109 guest rooms, each with different theme décor, and an incredible hot pink dining room. The property's gas station has been converted into a wine shop. Alix and Phyllis Madonna opened the Inn in 1958 with just 12 rooms. Alix’s fortune came from the construction business which included the removal of giant boulders - many of which were used in building the Inn. In the early 1960s, two 14-room units were added to either side of the original building. In 1965, the main complex was completed: a Swiss chalet-style building with dining room, coffee shop, lobby and gift shops. The most elaborate theme rooms are in the Hilltop Unit which has 84 rooms and was built in 1969.

The Gold Rush Dining Room, which seats 500, has a hand-carved marble balustrade, round hot pink booths, kitschy murals and gold light fixtures (actually made of scrap copper). The coffee shop serves sandwiches made with pink bread. The men's room urinal features a photoelectric beam that activates a rock waterfall when one pees into it.

Rooms at the Madonna Innn are booked months in advance. Postcards are available of each one. The Caveman Room features rocks and a waterfall shower. It is connected to the Daisy Mae Room by a four foot crawl space tunnel. The Old Mill Room has a functioning mill. The Buffalo Room features a taxidermied buffalo head mounted on the wall (he was a former Inn pet). The Tall and Short room has an unusual bed with one end measuring 5 1/2' long and the other 6 1/2' long. Each room at the Inn features upholstery and a color scheme that is thematically appropriate.
