KANSAS

White Haven
Motor Lodge
Overland Park, KS
former Safeway sign
Kansas City, KS
Wyandotte Plaza
Kansas City, KS
Townsman Motel
Yates Center, KS

The White Haven Motor Lodge was built in 1957. However, it might not be around much longer. For more, see this website.

This former Safeway sign and building have been reconfigured for Christ's Church of the Jesus Hour. The original sign looked something like this one. This same style sign was reused for a Sun Fresh Market in Independence, MO. There is/was an incredible Safeway sign in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Although the stores have changed many times I'm sure, the Wyandotte Plaza sign stands tall. It has been here since at least the 1950s. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Townsman Motel features a nice neon boomerang sign. For more, see their website. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Jack's Hamburgers
Wichita, KS
Welch Cleaners
Wichita, KS

Jack's Hamburgers, aka Jack's North Hi Carryout, is located across the street from North High School. Jack's opened in 1951. Although it was for sale in 2006, I'm told that the building is in good hands. [first photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Welch Cleaners is a Wichita chain that was founded in 1932. The globe, which once revolved, was part of their original design. This is the last location left with one. [first photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Hansen Linda Liquor Store
Wichita, KS
Cowboy Cleaners (closed)
Wichita, KS

There were a dozen Cowboy Cleaners in town by the late 1950s with freestanding rooftop lettering and pole signs of this horse and rider. The interiors featured a Western theme. The horse/rider shown above is at the Hansen Linda Liquor Store. The owner purchased the figure when one of the cleaners closed and placed it on the roof. [first photo/info thanks Glenda Campbell]

This last remaining location closed in 2005 and its horse/rider were immediately taken down and sold. Although the interior has been gutted, the lettered signage is still intact for now. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [info thanks Glenda Campbell]

Western Holiday Motel
Wichita, KS
El Mariachi
Wichita, KS
Tax Wise
Wichita, KS
Darlo Shoes
Wichita, KS
Dutch's Greenhouse
Wichita, KS

The Western Holiday Motel sign was once outlined with neon and his right arm moved up and down. He must have been modeled after Vegas Vic.

The El Mariachi sign is from around 2000. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Darlo Shoes features a combination neon and plastic sign. It was probably all neon originally.

Dutch's Greenhouse is a nice all-plastic freestanding pole sign. It was very likely neon originally.

Hyde Park
Ice Cream (gone)
Wichita, KS
West Side
Flower Shop (gone)
Wichita, KS
Bell Carpet & Floors
Wichita, KS
Cooper Drug
Augusta, KS

Hyde Park Ice Cream had long been closed when this photo was taken. After a series of owners, the café on the property finally removed the sign. It is now in a sign shop's yard. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

The West Side Flower Shop had been around since 1952. In fact, there had been a flower shop in this building since 1922. In 2006, a different business moved in and the sign disappeared. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Bell Carpet & Floors and Cooper Drug feature their original neon signs. [photos thanks Glenda Campbell]

Jayhawk Tower
Topeka, KS
Donald's Serva-teria
Pratt, KS
OK Used Cars
Cedar Vale, KS

The Jayhawk Tower was originally the Hotel Jayhawk. The sign's lettering was changed from "Hotel" to "Tower". The hotel closed in the mid-1970s and was converted into an office tower in 1982. The Jayhawk is a mythical bird and mascot of the University of Kansas. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Donald's Serva-teria has been here since around 1952. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

The OK Used Cars sign is at a closed car lot. The "OK" trademark was developed by Chevrolet as a seal-of-approval for their used cars. For another example, see Peck Chevy in Arlington, VA [photo thanks Glenda Campbell]

Cardinal Building Services
Topeka, KS
Tevis Restaurant
Topeka, KS

Cardinal Building Services is now part of BG Service Solutions, another janitorial business. Although Cardinal Building Services was founded in 1973, the sign looks older than that.

The Tevis Restaurant opened in 1965. They announced that they were closing in 2007. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
