The El Rancho Motel sign is still nicely lit at night (sorry, I missed getting a photo of it on this trip). This sign and the others that follow are all located on Main St., which was formerly known as the Apache Trail (Old US 60). It was Motel Row in the 1950s, but it's now more like RV Row with many sprawling RV dealerships.
Pat's Cyclery opened in 1947. Their neon sign still functions perfectly and is animated. |

| The Holiday Motel sign mimics the real live palm trees next to it. Only one palm is lit on either side of the sign at night (the other flickers and needs repair). |

The Lost Dutchman Lodge is now known as the Lost Dutchman Comfort Lodge. The sign features a gold satellite ball on top. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. |

The El Capitan Lodge and the Roadrunner Motel are both still open for business on Route 66. For more, see this website.
The La Mesita Lodge is now used a temporary family housing. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. The Trava-Leers Motel (what a cute name!) sign is still lit at night. I'm not sure if the spear-like projections refer to anything or are simply an abstract design. |

Tony M. Coury Buick opened in 1928. This sign looks like it's from the 1950s.
Watson's Flowers opened in 1927. The stucco building is from around 1920 and was originally a gas station with four cabins out back. Watson's moved here in 1933. For more, see this website. For another great sign in Mesa, see the Buckhorn Baths & Motel. The Two Palms Motel features a simple sign that is quite colorful at night. |

Big Baby with Tractors is a 20' tall painted plywood cut-out that was built in 1998 by John Cerney. It was commissioned by Duncan Family Farms as a marker for travelers to spot before taking the next exit to their educational farm which closed in 2004. The artwork has been vandalized with graffiti and the fleeing farmer's head has been broken off. The head of the driver of the tractor that the baby is playing with is also missing. There was originally a scolding mother. There is lots of development going on in the area so these pieces may be endangered. [note: some of the blurry figures around the signs are my dogs enjoying a romp in this giant dirt field]
The Giant Woman and Man is another artwork installation by John Cerney. (I don't know the actual name of the piece.) It is just down the road from the Big Baby. I assume these figures were also commissioned by the Duncan Family Farms. Other Cerney pieces appear in Dunlap, IA, Palm Desert, CA and Salinas, CA. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. |
