Cherokee, NC
Cindy's Dairy Bar
Cherokee, NC
Wigwam Motel
Cherokee, NC
Three Pines Motel [gone]
Maggie Valley, NC

This Chief Motel sign was removed in 2008 and replaced with a boring plastic version. For more, see this website.

The Princess Motel burned down around 2003 and remains abandoned. The sign hasn't budged.

Cindy's Dairy Bar is another old hold-out.

Wigwam Motel features a sweet old teepee-shaped sign. The name and sign might have been inspired by Redford's Wigwam Villages which were established in the late 1930s.

The Three Pines Motel opened in 1963. This sign was replaced with a plastic backlit sign and the motel was put up for sale. I believe it might be gone now.

Arrowhead Motel
Whittier, NC
Teddy Bear Motel
Whittier, NC
Cherokee
Trader Motel
Cherokee, NC
Pink Motel
Cherokee, NC

The Arrowhead Motel must have had some nice neon originally.

The Teddy Bear Motel opened around 1956.

The Cherokee Trader is a gift shop. Their sign is nicely lit at night. For more, see this website.

The Pink Motel sign is a favorite with photographers even though it could really use a good scrubbing. Disney released the animated film "Peter Pan" in 1953 and this fairy might have been influenced by the Tinker Bell character. For more, see this website.

Warrior Motel
Bryson City, NC

The Warrior Motel sign was once animated. The Indian's arm with the hatchet moved up and down.

Apothecary Shop
Hendersonville, NC
Bildon
Hendersonville, NC
Cox Family Restaurant
Morehead City, NC

The Apothecary Shop is now home to Mike's Sandwich Shop but this sign remains.

The Bildon ferris wheel sign is 50' tall. It no longer operates and might be torn down. For more, see this website.

The Cox Family Restaurant features this wonderful house detail.

Mount Airy, NC
Stag N Doe Pizza House

Gary's Barbecue
China Grove, NC

The Rowland Supply Co. is long gone but the sign remains. There is a church in the building below now.

The Triangle Motor Inn features a giant sign with chasing bulbs and an animated flame.

The Star Lite Motel features a remodeled Holiday Inn "Great Sign".

This Big Man sign was created for the Big Man Shell Service gas station in the 1950s. There was another location with this sign in Washington, NC. When these photos were taken around 2001, it was then a BP station. Sometime between 2001 and 2006, he was repainted for "Pack's Produce". He was painted again after that for Young Enterprises. For more, see this website.

The Stag N Doe Pizza House has been around since 1953 and features this giant Pepsi sign. The place appeared closed in 2008. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

Gary's Barbecue features a similar sign with a giant Pepsi and Coca-Cola logos. Gary's opened in 1971. The signs appear older than that so I suspect they were reworked or moved here from someplace else. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

Norge Home Appliances
Hamlet, NC
Birmingham Drug Co.
Hamlet, NC
New China (now Las Amacas) Restaurant
Wilson, NC

The Norge Home Appliances sign hangs above the Richmond Upholstery shop now.

The Birmingham Drug Co. is still in business.

The New China Restaurant, aka "China Garden", was originally the Coral Room Restaurant. The lettering was changed on this artist palette-shaped sign with oversized silverware to reflect the new name. In 2006, the restaurant became "Las Amacas" and the sign was altered again.

Public Hardware
Durham, NC
North Carolina Equipment Company
Raleigh, NC
Revel's Barbecue Lodge
Rockingham, NC

The Public Hardware sign was once located downtown and relocated with the business when they moved. They are Durham's oldest hardware store, family-operated since 1924. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

The North Carolina Equipment Company opened around 1934. This huge, double-sided rooftop tractor sign once had functioning neon. It was built in the late 1940s/early 1950s. In 2009, a new tenant moved into the building which had been vacant for years. The sign will be refurbished. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

The original Revel's Barbecue Lodge sign was built around 1952. It featured animated pig hooves and a flashing arrow. This sign is from the mid-1970s. It was a copy created to change the "Chicken in a Basket" to "Fried Chicken". The restaurant has been demolished. The owner had hoped to move to a former Howard Johnson's in Rockingham but I don't think that happened. The fate of the sign is unknown. For more, see this website.

Coffee Cup [gone]
Charlotte, NC
Park-N-Shop
Charlotte, NC
Queen Park Tower
Charlotte, NC
Red Goose Shoes
Goldsboro, NC

The Coffee Cup opened in 1947 and the sign was installed at that time. In 2007, the business moved to a new location and left the sign behind. In 2009, the sign was stolen and the building was demolished. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Park-N-Shop was once the largest grocery store chain in Charlotte. This location was built in 1962. It features a huge backlit plastic rooftop sign and an enormous canopy. I believe the first building in this style was constructed in Charlotte in 1959. Compare Foods, which owns the store now, has added their own name to the sign. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

The Queen Park Tower was erected in the 1950s to advertise for the Queen Park Multi Cinema. The Cinema has now been converted into the Queen Park Business Center but the sign remains fairly intact.

The Red Goose Shoes sign hands above the Family Shoe Store. For more, see this webpage. For more Red Goose Shoe signs, see this page.

Martin Drug Co.
Kannapolis, NC
Don Murray's
Barbecue & Seafood [closed]
Raleigh, NC

I believe the Tallywood Shopping Center opened in 1964.

Butler's Pharmacy features an old navy blue Rexall sign. I believe these signs are older than the more common orange and blue signs like this one in Willits, CA.

The Martin Drug Co. sign appears to be from the 1950s. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

Don Murray's Barbecue & Seafood has been here since the 1970s. Their sign features a miniature version of their building. The restaurant closed in 2007. [photo thanks Robby Delius]
