The White Sands Missile Range is located just outside Alamogordo. At one time, Alamogordo was known as "the Rocket City."
The Rocket Motel sign was later adapted for a fireworks business many years later. I believe the motel was built in the 1950s. The Rocket Lounge has been replaced with this strip mall but this sign remains. For more space-inspired Alamogordo signs, see this page. This Acme Drive-in Cleaners sign was probably from the 1950s. The photo above is from 2008. By 2012, the neon sign had been replaced with a plastic box sign. The White Sands Motel sign is probably from the 1960s. |

The Sands Motel sign is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. The bottom part of the sign which has been painted over read "Pool".
The Town House Motel sign appears to be from the 1950s or 1960s. It was repainted between 2008 (first two photos above) and 2012 (third photo). |

Around 2008, the Package Liquor sign was repainted and the neon was removed. This photo is from 2012. For more, see this website. The Mayo Motel has a plastic box sign with a neon diving woman and pool. The motel was known as the Mayo Lodge in the 1950s. There was a much larger neon sign then. The neon on the Variety Liquor & Lounge sign seems to be intact. More than likely, the drops from the bottle are or were animated.
The rooftop sign at Quality Liquor is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. The Roswell Seed Co. was established as the Roswell Produce and Seed Company in 1898. The Frontier Motel sign is still lit at night. For more, see this website. The first Farley's opened in Ruidoso, NM in 1995. It was followed by locations in Las Cruces and this one in Roswell. This modern sign was modeled after those built for Ships Coffee Shops. |

The Westward Ho Motel sign design was probably inspired by the classic Holiday Inn sign. The motel might have had a different name originally and neon where the plastic panels are now.
Clovis Safety Lane is a full service repair garage. These laughing bear signs were mass-produced and installed nationwide. Most of the remaining examples are in Southern California. Bear Alignment was a national chain established in the 1920s. These signs were used at shops that used Bear tools. For more, see this page. This vintage Santa Fe sign was originally installed on a freight house roof. When the building was demolished in the 1980s, the sign was removed. After residents demanded it be returned, it was installed as a pole sign. For more, see this website. |
