Drake Motel
Springfield, OH
Reco Sporting Goods
Springfield, OH
Schuler's Bakery
Springfield, OH

The Drake Motel has a huge, eye-catching sign. It had a twin in Indianapolis, IN (to be demolished in 2005).

Reco Sporting Goods specializes in uniforms and fishing supplies.

Schuler's Bakery has a great old interior, storefront and signs. They are known for their killer whole wheat doughnuts.

Plaza Shopping Center
Lancaster, OH
Jolly Pirate Donuts [gone]
Lancaster, OH
Dreamland Motel
Norwalk, OH
Vargo's Food N Fun
Norwalk, OH
Maples Motel
Sandusky, OH

The Plaza Shopping Center is rather drab in comparison to this sign. Hopefully, when it is eventually renovated, they'll hang on to this classic.

This Jolly Pirate Donuts location opened in 1966 and closed/was demolished in 2003. There are still more than a dozen other Jolly Pirates in OH, WV and KY. I don't know if this sign was saved but there is another nicely maintained example in Grove City, OH.

The Dreamland Motel and sign look to be from the 1950s (or earlier).

Vargo's Food N Fun features this neat sign, a food stand, and a simple miniature golf course.

The Maples Motel has four cabins from the 1920s and some other units from the 1950s. For more, see their website.

Jolly Donut
Sandusky, OH

The Jolly Donut (no relation to Jolly Pirate Donuts shown above as far as I know) features homemade donuts and a great plastic sign. Hidden behind the brick is a well-maintained Mountain View diner (#414) from the early 1950s.

Peter Pan Donuts
Cleveland, OH

I believe this Peter Pan Donuts was previously a Mister Donut (a big chain that was bought out by Dunkin' Donuts). Or it may have been a fast food place. Does anyone recognize the building style or the shape of the signage?

Pawnee Lanes
Cleveland, OH
Carol's Maple Leaf Tavern
Cleveland, OH
White Wheel Aligning Service
Cleveland, OH
Cleveland Indian
Cleveland, OH

The Pawnee Lanes opened in 1947 and the sign is probably from the same time.

The Carol's Maple Leaf Tavern sign is probably from the 1950s.

White Wheel Aligning Service opened here in 1950. For more, see their website.

The huge Cleveland Indian (aka Chief Wahoo) sign is at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. I believe he was installed at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium from the early 1950s until the mid-1990s. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Yorktown Lanes
Cleveland, OH
Mahall's Twenty Lanes
Cleveland, OH

Yorktown Lanes opened in 1959. For more, see their website.

Mahall's Twenty Lanes opened in 1924 with six lanes, a poolroom, a confectionery store, a barbershop, a dance hall and a party center. Later, they added more lanes and pool tables, as well as a bar/restaurant. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Kluck's Restaurant (closed)
Cleveland, OH

Kluck's Restaurant had been here since 1939. It closed in 2007. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Loomis Camera
Elyria, OH
Czech Grill
Lorain, OH
Pepsi
East Palestine, OH

The Loomis Camera sign features a giant camera which has been updated over the years. The Loomis Company was founded in the late 1800s as a stationery store. In 1944, they added cameras and photographic equipment. In 1957, the business was moved here. The sign's camera was originally a press camera. In the 1970s, it was Kodak Instamatic with a flash cube that actually flashed. Today, it is a Pentax 35mm SLR. For more, see their website.

The Czech Grill survives in a rough neighborhood. It looks 1930s or 1940s to me.

This Pepsi sign is mounted on the roof of what appears to be either a flea market or a building used for storage.

Pied Piper Drive-in
Huron, OH
Jer-zee Drive-in
Marion, OH
Louie's Liquors
Lima, OH
Corner Grill
Bowling Green, OH

The Pied Piper Drive-in looks like it is from the 1950s.

The Jer-zee Drive-in opened in 1949. For more ice cream stands and signs, see this section.

Louie's Liquors is really a bar, also known as Louie's Nite Club.

The Corner Grill opened in 1951. The sign is the original. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Warren Baking Co.
Warren, OH
Echo Lanes Bowl
Warren, OH
Freeway Lanes
Warren, OH
King Pin Lanes
Toledo, OH

The Warren Baking Co. features a nice neon sign and storefront. The business was founded in 1925.

The Echo Lanes Bowl and the Freeway Lanes were probably built around the same time (1950s?). Their signs have been updated with plastic but still retain the character of the originals. The Freeway Lanes was previously known as the Rainbow Lanes. For more, see this website.

The King Pin Lanes has another old bowling sign.

Mail Pouch barn
Heath, OH
Mail Pouch barn
near Lisbon, OH

At one time, there were more than 10,000 Mail Pouch barn signs in the Midwest but less than half remain today. The ads were painted in exchange for cash, magazine subscriptions, chewing tobacco or for painting the entire barn. The Mail Pouch Tobacco Company (now Bloch Brothers) was based in West Virginia. The signs were painted from the 1920s until the 1990s. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

For more barn-painted signs, see this page, about Rock City advertising.
