La Rita Theatre

The La Rita Theatre was built in the 1920s. The theatre was restored in 1989 and renamed the La Rita Performing Arts Theatre. For more, see this website.

Mission Theatre

The Mission Theatre opened in 1915. It was known as the Mission Twins when the first photo above was taken in 2006. The theatre was gutted in 2011 and now houses the Hillside Christian Church. For more, see this website.

Jefferson Theatre

The Jefferson Theatre was designed by Emile Weil and opened in 1927 as part of the Saenger chain. The theatre has been restored and still has its original Robert Morton organ. Capitan Theatre

The Capitan Theatre was designed by Raymond F. Smith and opened in 1949. It has been closed since 1969. The exterior and neon have been restored but the interior is still in bad shape. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Granada Theatre

The Granada Theatre was built in 1949. It has been closed for many years. This theatre is basically a twin to the Capitan Theatre in Pasadena described above. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Tower Theatre opened in 1936. In the 1970s, it was converted into a live music venue. Then in the 1980s and 1990s, it served as the nightclubs: "Clubland" and "Decadance at The Tower Theatre". It housed a Hollywood Video store when the first photo above was taken in 2006. In 2011 (second photo), the El Real Tex-Mex restaurant moved into the building. The Garden Oaks Theatre opened in 1947. It closed sometime in the 1990s. The building now houses the Grace Church. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Heights Theatre opened in 1929. The exterior was remodeled in 1935. The theatre was damaged by a fire in 1969 and gutted. It closed in 1999 and the building was used for retail space. The building now houses an art gallery. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

The Majestic Metro Theatre opened in 1926 as the Ritz Theatre. The name was changed in the 1970s. The building is now used as a banquet hall. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Alabama Theatre

The Alabama Theatre was designed by W. Scott Dunne and opened in 1939. The theatre closed in 1983 and was converted into a Bookstop book store in 1984. The interior was sensitively remodeled. The balcony was used as a café and study area. The screen and murals inside were preserved. The signs outside were also retained. The store closed in 2009 and the interior has been gutted. Paramount Theatre
Abilene, TX
The Paramount Theatre was built in an atmospheric style to resemble a Spanish/Moorish courtyard. It features a 90 foot tall marquee. The theatre opened in 1930 and closed in the mid-1970s. It reopened briefly in 1979 as a country music venue. The theatre was saved from demolition in 1984. Restoration begin in 1985 and it reopened in 1987.
