TEEPEE RESTAURANTS & GAS STATIONS (page 2)

Walls Bakery [closed]
Waldorf, MD

Walls Bakery occupied what was originally known as "The Wig-wam": a restaurant and gambling casino with slot machines. It was built in the late 1940s. At that time, Waldorf was a mini Las Vegas with motels, nightclubs, etc. The teepee part of the Wig-wam was once used as a BBQ pit with a ventilation pipe coming out at the top. In more recent years, the building's interior was an odd mix of gifts, Native American souvenirs, and the bakery. It had been home to Walls since 1969. In 1990, the sign was knocked over in a thunderstorm but it was repaired in the late 1990s. Walls Bakery left the building in 2005 and this building and sign have been abandoned since then. The building is boarded up (bottom photo) and the totem pole is gone. The property is supposedly owned by a car dealership that is waiting for better economic times to open there. The bakery reopened in a new location. For more, see these websites: 1, 2.

The Wigwams (now Jasper Historical Museum)
Jasper, NY

The Wigwams Free Museum and Restaurant used to have Gulf pumps out front. It currently serves as the Jasper Historical Museum. It is not known when it was built.

Mi Cabana Restaurant
Tucson, AZ

Mi Cabana features Mexican food and a teepee on its roof. Thre is also a teepee incorporated into its fence. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Kramer's Wigwam
Browning, MT

Kramer's Wigwam was a gas station/café. It was later called the Wigwam Café. A visitor to my website in 2004 assured me that it is still in Browning but it has been moved a couple times around town. [third photo thanks Mack Lundy Jr, USAF retired]

former gas station
Hilltop, KY
former gas station
Allentown, AZ

This former Hilltop station used this metal teepee as the station's attendant's booth. It was part of a truck stop which included a restaurant and this gas station. The buildings were constructed in the 1930s. There is nothing left of the station now other than this teepee but the former restaurant remains. The teepee once was decorated with neon and painted triangles. The paper signs on the teepee which advertise for the Finch Oil Company were added recently. The original owner built two of these teepees. All that remains of the other one which is located on Route 36 is the lower half.

The former Allentown gas station is just off I-40 and was known at one time as the Indian City Exxon. It is now vacant and stands next to Armand Ortega's Indian City, a giant souvenir and Indian arts/crafts shop. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Geronimo's Castle [closed]
Bowie, AZ

Geronimo's Castle was built in the 1940s. The building has been used as a Greyhound Bus Depot, curio shop, gas station, and restaurant. It was supposedly built where Chief Geronimo of the Apaches was captured. The postcard invited tourists to "stop in for a bottle of beer!". It is now simply named "The Teepee". It was a bar and grill for many years but it closed in 2004 and has remained vacant ever since. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Wigwam Service Station [gone]
Weyauwega, WI

Nothing is known about the Wigwam Service Station. It probably contained a café like Kramer's and Geronimo's.

Cherokee Restaurant
Muskegon, MI
The Big Tepee
Pocahontas, MS

The Cherokee Restaurant opened in 1975. It features a teepee style entrance.

The Big Tepee was previously known as Big D's BBQ. In 2010, it had been closed for remodeling for at least a year. The restaurant opened in the 1980s but I believe the teepee was added later. It is built of monolithic dome type material.

TePee Tim's BBQ
New Stanton, PA

TePee Tim's BBQ is 40' tall and made of canvas. It was built in 2005 and is used as a restaurant. Smoke billowing from the top is visible from the nearby interstate. For more, see this website.

There are other unusual gas stations scattered throughout this section.
