| The Booming Prairie Chicken was built in 1976. It is made of concrete over a metal frame by Art Fosse. The statue is 13 feet tall by 18 feet long. Rothsay claims to be the Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota. There are large numbers of them roaming the prairies in the area. In early spring, the male prairie chicken performs a mating ritual called "booming" during which he spreads his wings and tail feathers, inflates the orange sacs on either side of his neck, and makes a booming sound. |

[photo thanks Mark Comstock] The Giant Eagle in Park Falls is installed in front of the City Hall as a Veteran's Memorial. This statue of "Old Abe" seems to be a replacement of an earlier version. Old Abe was an eagle that was caught near Park Falls by Native Americans. Named after Abraham Lincoln, he became an army mascot during the Civil War. The statue's head is lowered in honor of fallen soldiers. For more, see this website. |

The Vandalia Eagle is one of two identical statues flanking the entrance to the Vandalia Correctional Center. They appear to be J.I. Case Company statues with the "CASE" name removed from the front of the globes. If they were not originally Case statues, they were definitely built to resemble them.
J. I. Case Company, a producer of farm machinery, began using this representation of "Old Abe" in 1865. They mass-produced these statues for use at farm equipment dealers. There are also still a number of Case neon signs around the country using this eagle logo. A couple examples can be found in Belle Plaine, IA and Minden, NE. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. The Parsons Eagle is a cast-iron J.I. Case statue. It is located at Trotnic Recycling. The two Case Eagles in Waring are installed in front of Waring Hall. |

This giant Swan Head is on the property of the Villa Chalets. I believe it has been here since at least the 1970s. This could be a duck, goose or some other bird - I'm open to correction! Does anyone know more about it? The Giant Swan in Elk Rapids is 15 feet tall. It was built in 1966 to carry Miss Elk Rapids in the Cherry Festival and Harbor Days parades. The statue was then used in various parades and public appearances in the 1970s before being installed here permanently outside the Chamber of Commerce building. |

The Magic Beach Motel features this rooftop flamingo sculpture. It appears to be made of cement. The motel's entrance also features decorative flamingos. The Wisconsin Dells Flamingo Motel features a 26 foot tall flamingo. It was produced by FAST. When the statue was originally installed, there was no sign around his legs. For more, see this page. FAST produced the only other flamingo like this for M. Schettl Sales. For more giant Dells animals, see this page. The Marshalltown Flamingo Motel appears to be from the 1950s. I don't know how long this giant flamingo has been here. For more, see this website. The Café Hon pink flamingo is 30 feet tall. It was installed around 2002 and is made of chicken wire, wood and bed sheets. The sculpture was probably inspired by the movie "Pink Flamingos" by John Waters, a Baltimore native. The restaurant removed the statue briefly in 2009. For more, see this website. |
