The ship-like Bradford Beach Bathhouse was designed by Gilbert Grunwald and built in 1950.
The S.C. Johnson Wax Company Research and Development Tower was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built from 1947-1950. The brick and glass building has been empty since about 1970 since it doesn't meet safety codes (there are no fire escapes). For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. The most famous structure on the Johnson Wax property is the Administration Building with its Great Workroom interior filled with dendriform columns. It was designed by Wright from 1936-1939. Unfortunately, the building is only accessible during public tours on Fridays (which it wasn't when I was there). The Johnson Wax campus also features the mid-century Golden Rondelle Theatre. |
