A-FRAME CHAINS: GRIFF'S BURGER BAR

Griff's Burger Bar
1965, location unknown

The Griff's Burger Bar chain was founded in 1960 in TX by the Griffiths family. By 1965, there were 65 locations. They had locations nationwide with the majority in the South near highway exits. The company used an A-frame style building similar to Gibson's. The buildings were produced by Valentine (of diner fame). Griff's featured drive-thru windows and giant signs. "Griffy", their mascot, was used extensively in their signage and advertising. Although the chain has officially folded, there are remaining locations in: CO (Arvada, Denver), LA (Bossier City), and TX (Dallas, Fort Worth, Garland, Irving, Mesquite, San Antonio). Some of these still have the A-frame design. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. [photo scan thanks Robby Delius]

Sedalia, MO

This Sedalia location appears to be from the 1960s.

Griff's Burger Bar
Albuquerque, NM

The Albuquerque Griff's is on Route 66. There was once another location in town. For more, see this website.

Griff's Burger Bar
Ruston, LA

The Ruston Griff's is another old location in great shape. I have never seen this insignia sign before that is over the entrance.

Grinder Man
Wichita, KS

Grinder Man was originally a Griff's Burger Bar. It was built in the late 1960s. For more, see this website. [photos thanks Glenda Campbell]

former Griff's Burger Bar
Kansas City, KS
Subway
Independence, MO

The former Kansas City Griff's is the most intact Griff's building I have seen. It was most recently the "El Puerto" restaurant. As of 2006, the building was vacant.

This Subway location is obviously a former Griff's Burger Bar.

Shreveport, LA

There are two Tom's Seafood restaurants in Shreveport occupying former Griff's Burger Bars.

Griff's Burger Bar
Irving, TX

Griff's Burger Bar
Dallas, TX

This Irving Griff's and Dallas Griff's both feature A-frame buildings and vintage signs. As far as I know, the Dallas Griff's is the only one left with a neon sign. I believe the Irving Griff's was the third one built in the chain.

former Satellite Burger & Dairy Bar
Little Rock, AR

This Satellite Burger & Dairy Bar sure looks like a Griff's. Does anyone know more about this chain? [1963 advertisement scan thanks Robby Delius]
